GOD IS ALL
The beloved disciple John wrote in the book of Revelation (22: 17): "The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."
The message of Christian Science to the world today coincides with that of the beloved disciple. It invites each individual to partake of a fuller sense of life. It shows how the great truth of God's allness may be brought to bear on any human problem, dissolving whatever is discordant. It explains that the need is always to come up mentally to higher ground. The material sense of things, with its aggressive claim to power, would keep one in bond-age to the belief that evil is real and has a place in the divine economy. But if one is willing to come out from this mesmeric belief and draw near to the great heart of infinite Love, he learns that God is All and that there is none else, as the Bible teaches.
Christian Science offers the refreshing, thirst-quenching water of spiritual understanding which uplifts the weary one and heals the hopeless sufferer. It satisfies the searcher for God and turns human thought away from matter to Spirit as the only cause, the All-in-all of being. If we agree that Spirit, God, is the only cause or source, then all that is produced by this cause or emanates from this source must partake of its nature and must therefore be spiritual.
The disciple John's invitation to come is especially designated for those who are athirst. He knew that those who are yearning to know God would also have the requisite humility to perceive the infinite nature of God. This invitation to come carries promise of great reward for those who accept—even the opportunity to take of this water of life freely.
The Christian Science movement in the world today is supplying the thirst-quenching water of life to all who are ready to come and drink. The weekly Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, the periodicals, the church services, the Christian Science lectures—all meet the great need of mankind for spiritual awakening.
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," under the marginal heading "God's allness learned," Mary Baker Eddy makes this profound statement (pp. 109, 110): "The three great verities of Spirit, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,—Spirit possessing all power, filling all space, constituting all Science,—contradict forever the belief that matter can be actual. This illuminating statement leaves no loophole for error.
An earnest student of Christian Science, one with whom the writer has been closely associated for a number of years, had a proof of the practical value of the understanding of God's allness. She met with an accident in her kitchen, severely injuring a finger. She felt a great sense of pain, so great that it seemed to fill the room. As she reached out to God for help, the words of "the scientific statement of being," given on page 468 of Science and Health, came to her thought. The words "God is All-in-all" from the sentence, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all," flooded her consciousness with such clarity that she declared, "God is All." She declared this to be the truth. Instantly she was conscious of the presence of spiritual light with an accompanying calm and peace that was indescribable. She heard the words, as if they were spoken to her, "omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience." Again she declared, "This is the truth." As she discovered that the finger had been broken—the bone was protruding—she felt the bone move into place. There was no pain. Approximately two hours later she was using the finger, and all swelling had disappeared. The discoloration was gone in four days.
This was a decisive proof of God's law in operation. Our beloved Leader writes (No and Yes, p. 30), "God's law is in three words, 'I am All; and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law."
Divine Truth, as revealed in Christian Science, furnishes us with the lens of spiritual understanding, through which we may see correctly. The spiritual perception made possible through the lens of spiritual understanding lifts individual consciousness to behold man at one with God, the all-good.
Allness is oneness. We cannot have the allness of God and a problem. We cannot have allness and anything else. If we do seem to have a problem to work out of, it is because we do not know enough about the allness of God. Our great need is to know God and to gain the altitude of thought that sees God and His spiritual and perfect creation to be all there is.
