RADIO PROGRAM No. 65 - You Can Have God's Help Now

On this program Mrs. Grace V. Dickinson of New York, New York, told of her own experience as follows:

For eighteen years I suffered severe attacks of asthma. During that period I turned to several physicians for help. All declared that there was no known cure. These physicians were most kind and did all they could to relieve me. However, I grew steadily worse. A change of climate failed to give me relief.

A member of my family had been interested in Christian Science for a number of years, but stubbornness had prevented me from investigating it. It was not until three physicians in consultation declared that my baby, then nine months old, could not possibly live that I turned to Christian Science for help for him. He was completely healed of double pneumonia and heart trouble in one Christian Science treatment.

Having witnessed this beautiful instantaneous healing, I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, to find out how Christian Science heals.

Before I had finished the chapter on Prayer—the first chapter in the textbook—I realized that for the first time in my life I was beginning to know how to pray. I had prayed to be freed from my affliction, but believing God had afflicted me for some unknown reason, there was always doubt that He would want to free me. I had believed that God was a God of good and evil, sometimes very near, but most of the time so very far away. I believed that God had given to some very lovely natures, and to some He had given unlovely natures, such as mine seemed to be. I had a very bad disposition—was ill-tempered, impatient, intolerant, and full of self-will.

As I continued to read Science and Health, I began to glimpse the fact that God is all good; that He is divine Love, infinite and omnipresent. Here was a God I could love and trust, a God who loved me and could not afflict me. I realized for the first time that because God had made man in His image and likeness, as stated in the first chapter of Genesis, man is God's reflection, reflecting the perfect, spiritual nature of God.

I did not realize that a great transformation was taking place. It did not occur to me to prepare my bedside table with the vapor lamp and other relief remedies, as had been my custom for years, nor to prepare the chair with pillows in the event of an attack, which necessitated my sitting up all night.

It was not until three months after beginning the reading of the textbook that attention was called to the fact that I had not had an attack of asthma since starting to read Science and Health. Not only had the disease vanished, but gone were those binding, hampering traits of character. All this occurred a good many years ago, and the healing has proved permanent. My activities have increased with the years, and I am happier and healthier than ever.

The commentary was as fallows:

Thank you, Mrs. Dickinson, for sharing your experience with us. A little later, friends, our hymn will touch on some of the helpful points Mrs. Dickinson has mentioned. But first, I wonder if you know why it's actually true, as the title of our program says, that you can have God's help now? For the fact is, God's love and goodness are just as available to you as they were to our guest in her time of need.

You may not think of yourself as very religious. You may not be a regular churchgoer. Yet if you're like most people, you believe in God. But perhaps you, like many others, have asked God's help only in times of crisis—only as a lat resort, when all material means have failed.

But why not have God's guidance and help in every problem you face? Why not rely on His love to maintain harmony in all of your affairs? You can do this by learning what God is and what He does for man. Through Christian Science our guest gained a clearer understanding of God. Her thinking was uplifted and transformed, and the result was physical healing. You see, the purifying of her consciousness removed the selfish, material thinking that produced sickness.

The only thing that ever keeps us from experiencing God's healing power is the wrong thinking we accept as our own. Mrs. Dickinson gave some examples. Stubbornness had to give way to open-mindedness —willingness to learn more of God. She suffered from the belief that God had afflicted her with asthma and had given her a bad disposition. Consequently she thought of God with doubt and distrust. At the bottom of this state of mind lay also the false human conviction that man is a mortal, material being, separated from God and subject to evil.

But just through reading the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, she gained a totally new understanding of God and a changed view of man. This opened the way for God's help, and finally she realized that she was well.

You see, she learned that God's healing and saving power is never taken away, for God is infinite Love; His love for man is constant and unchanging. Contrary to what she had previously thought, she found that God does not afflict anyone with disease or misery. He is eternal Life, giving life and strength to His likeness, man. It dawned upon her that God is not the author of mortal faults, for He is perfect Mind; and perfect Mind could not create imperfect thoughts. God is never absent from where we are, for He is infinite Spirit, filling all space.

The Bible tells us of God's ever-present present love and justice. Moses said, "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he." And from Job, "He is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict."

Now it follows that man, made by God in His own likeness and governed by Him, actually could not be a sickly mortal made up of flesh and bones and mortal traits of character. Mrs. Dickinson realized that pain, misery, and unhappiness could be no part of God's man, because they have no place in God. They are not in accord with God's perfect law of harmony. Then she realized how unnecessary had been her suffering. Her restoration to health bears out the words of Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 62): "Our false views of life hide eternal harmony, and produce the ills of which we complain." And on another page (203), "If God were understood instead of being merely believed, this understanding would establish health."

All that was necessary for our guest was for her to awaken to the perfection of God's creation and thus destroy her false views of God and man. That is all that is necessary for anyone who needs God's help. This is an opportunity not for a distant tomorrow, but for everyone here and now.

Since God is Love, and is all-powerful, isn't it logical that the evidence of His power should be the overcoming of hatred, the healing of disease, the lifting up of the evildoer, the healing of discord at home and in our work, the enrichment of lonely, empty lives? Of course it's logical! And it is this healing, saving love of God which Christian Science shows us how to understand and prove in healing.

The musical selection on the program was hymn No. 244 from the Christian Science Hymnal.
