My introduction to Christian Science...

My introduction to Christian Science came through a neighbor, who said that she had had several operations and had been in the hospital for months at a time, but had received no benefit. Then through the aid of Christian Science she had experienced a remarkable healing.

My husband and I agreed that if Christian Science could bring about such a wonderful change in her, it could help me. After years of suffering from liver and kidney trouble, together with complications resulting from it, I did not know a well day. For several years I could not eat anything that contained acid. In addition I suffered from neuralgia.

My first visit to a Christian Science practitioner was a memorable experience. She talked lovingly about God, telling me that it was not His will for anyone to be sick and that it is our birthright to be well and happy and to take our place in the world. She told me that I could go home and eat anything I wanted and that it would not hurt me. I proved her words true that night, for I ate tomatoes with salt, something I had not done for more than five years. I felt no ill effects and have ever since continued to eat without discomfort anything I wished. That healing occurred in 1912.

My father, who was a minister of the gospel, had said that people were no longer healed by prayer, but he accepted the new interpretation of the Bible given by Mrs. Eddy. He said to me, "We all know what Christian Science has done for you, and we are grateful for it." On two different occasions he was freed from attacks of some nature which had rendered him completely helpless. After the second time the condition did not recur.

My husband and I have continued to be devoted students of Christian Science, studying the writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and subscribing to the periodicals. Through the years we have had many healings. Some of them were those of heart trouble, pneumonia, measles, and colds. As I have studied the Bible and the Christian Science literature my greatest desire has been to know more of the nature of God.

When I was suffering from a nervous difficulty, my practitioner recommended the study of the seven synonyms for God, which are set forth in Science and Health as Life, Truth, Love, Principle, Soul, Mind, and Spirit. I studied them and their positive qualities, realizing that because of them, negative elements, such as fear, matter, hate, and so forth, could have no place in God's perfect creation. The light of Truth dawned in my consciousness, and I was healed.

For a broader understanding of Spirit, God, and for all the healings that have resulted from it, I am profoundly grateful to God. I thank God for Mrs. Eddy's consecration in giving us the revelation of His presence and law, for the never-failing support given me by a selfless, loving practitioner whenever needed, for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and for class instruction. —(Mrs.) Emma Kerns, Reseda, California.
