When I married I moved next...

When I married I moved next door to a family of Christian Scientists. I liked them at once but paid little attention to their religion until one day when I was planning a dinner for guests, at which a composer was to play.

The morning of the event I awoke with a violent cold. Knowing that the guests would be disappointed if the arrangements were canceled, I asked my neighbor if she thought her practitioner could help me. She expressed assurance that she could, and I called the practitioner. Relief came quickly, and I was so uplifted that I continued with my plans for the dinner, which unfolded even more beautifully than I had hoped. I wanted to acquaint myself with the religion that had made this possible, and when I did I found it to be exactly what I had longed for—a way to accept the teachings of the Bible as facts.

Although I had many trials at first, I knew that without Christian Science there would be only confusion and darkness; so I struggled along, determined to rise above the material sense of things and to dwell in the realm of spiritual consciousness. I was sure that Christ Jesus had meant what he said when he declared that we could do the works he had done. As I continued to study and apply the truth my many difficulties were overcome.

One day the woods across from our home caught fire. Since I knew that only God could save us, I turned to Him with all my heart and felt a deep sense of gratitude for His presence. Then I experienced the joy of seeing the flames die out, leaving our home untouched.

I have learned to refuse to accept and support error, or mortal mind, which would obscure divine Mind's perfection. I am deeply grateful to God for the Christian Science movement and its workers. Mrs. Eddy indeed discerned the truth which Christ Jesus said would set us free.—(Mrs.) Alice Spohn Newton, Marietta, Georgia.
