It was not a desire for physical...

It was not a desire for physical healing but for a knowledge of God which led me to Christian Science. One whom I heard repeat the ninety-first Psalm and say, "God is Love," expressed so much spiritual understanding that I asked her how she had learned to understand the Bible as she did and if she had other books to help her. She lovingly told me about our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and lent me a copy. After reading only a few pages I knew that its truths were what I had been seeking.

During my first reading of Science and Health I was instantaneously healed of headaches which were so severe that sometimes I almost lost consciousness. I realized that pain was a belief of mortal mind and that I was in reality an idea of the one immortal divine Mind. I was at once completely free, and there has never been a return of the headaches.

At that time we were living on an Army post, my husband being in the service. One day after school our eldest daughter was the last to get into the Army truck that was used for a school bus. The motor stalled, causing the truck to jerk, and she fell out. The street was on an incline, and the truck rolled back, one wheel passing over both of her ankles. A soldier riding in the back jumped out in time to see this. He was very much frightened and wanted to take her to a hospital, but she begged to be taken home; so someone with a car brought her home.

The soldier in charge of the truck called his commanding officer to report the accident. The officer was at home when he received the call, and he told his wife what had happened; so she knew of the accident before I did. She was a Christian Scientist, the one who had told me of the textbook, and she immediately declared the truth as stated on page 424 of Science and Health: "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony. Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection."

It was required that X rays be made, and only a small fracture was discovered. In three days, during which the truth was firmly held to, the child was back in school climbing two flights of stairs to the classroom. The soldier who had seen the accident said, "If I had not seen what happened, I could not believe it now." This wonderful proof of God's protecting power, which came early in my study of Christian Science, has remained an inspiration to me throughout the years. I am grateful that our three daughters and our son have attended the Christian Science Sunday School and that it was my privilege to serve for three years as Second Reader in a branch church. My great desire is that I may let my light shine and so help others to find the truth as I did.

I cannot close without expressing deep gratitude for class instruction from a consecrated teacher, for our annual association meetings, which mean continued instruction and growth, and for our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. I thank God that I now know Him through an understanding of Christian Science and that I have the privilege of being a member of The Mother Church and a branch church.—(Mrs.) Fairy B. Weeks, Pensacola, Florida.
