Early in my study of Christian Science...

Early in my study of Christian Science I was saved from drowning by realizing something of the truth stated in "the scientific statement of being," given on page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At another time I was healed of badly torn ligaments of the hip by reading Science and Health for four hours.

Before boarding a transatlantic plane in July,1947, I sensed imminent danger. A change of reservation was sought, but because of the congested condition that had resulted from previously delayed flights, no change of reservation was available for many days.

In viewing the plane, I prayed, "Dear God, reveal more clearly to me how it is that You are infinitely greater than this mechanism, greater even than the material universe with its law of gravity and its belief of destruction." Quickly came the assuring answer to my thought: "I am greater than all these because I am the great I AM, the only existence, wisdom, or power; and I love My creation." This message brought peace and a sweet sense of gratitude, for I recognized that God is not merely greater than another power, but the only power, presence, and reality in existence. Power was perceived to be Principle, from which emanates the law that repudiates the arguments of physical disaster on the basis that divine Love is the only attraction and holds control over all.

After pondering these truths I boarded the plane, confident that everyone on the flight would be in God's loving care. Nearing the third hour over the ocean, an engine caught fire. The plane immediately banked for a return flight to its base, traveling at a slower speed and somewhat unbalanced. After the fire was extinguished another engine developed trouble, and trouble from other sources followed. Turning my thought completely away from the anxiety being expressed around me, I remained calm, fully confident of God's power to protect.

When the plane landed at its base these words flooded my consciousness (I Chron. 29:11): "Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all." During an eighteen-hour delay two new engines were installed, and a third damaged one was repaired. We then winged our way safely to our destination.

During the eight hours over the ocean I never ceased to give thanks to God for His blessings and to ponder His power. I declared and gave thanks that God loves His creation and that there is no material creation or law to separate man from his spiritual heritage. Profound gratitude was expressed for Mrs. Eddy's unremitting labor and unselfed love in making available to all mankind the Science she discovered in the Master's teachings and demonstrations of Truth.

Through this experience I found myself at the end of the return flight not only safe but free from travel weariness. I am indeed grateful that we can depend upon God's power and love in every experience and can demonstrate their presence through conviction born of understanding.—(Mrs.) Adele Nichols, Chadron, Nebraska.
