For over thirty years Christian Science...

For over thirty years Christian Science has been my only physician, and our children and I have experienced many healings. My first healing was of a condition which caused the tips of my fingers to split open and be very sore. I had been told by a doctor that I must keep my hands out of water and use a salve which he would give me. This was impossible for me to do as I had two small children and was doing my own housework. Then I wrote to a Christian Science practitioner for help. Within ten days my hands were completely healed.

There was no practitioner in our town, and I learned to work out many problems for myself. On page 229 of "Historical Sketches" by Clifford P. Smith is a quotation from a letter of Mrs. Eddy's in which she says: "Do not forget to be strong in the clear consciousness that you are able to heal and no counter mind can make you weak for a moment through fear or a lack of confidence in our power or rather understanding. Remember God, Truth, is the healer, the balm in Gilead. and our only Physician, and can never be insufficient for all things." I am grateful, too. for the loving help of practitioners.

Once I stepped from a bus into a deep hole in the grass of the boulevard and was thrown full length on the ground, badly injuring my ankle. With the help of a friend I walked several blocks to the home of another friend. The ankle swelled to about twice its normal size, and the pain was severe. Later a friend drove me home and helped me to my room. I immediately began to study and apply the truth concerning God and man according to my understanding. I was able to be at work a part of each day, although I limped badly for several days. Gradually I was able to walk so that the limp was hardly noticeable; however, the pain was still great, and many negative suggestions came to me as to my ability to handle the problem for myself.

About this time the lawyer from the bus company urged me to have medical care so that I would be able to sign an insurance paper. This I could not do. of course. A small bone seemed to be out of place, and I thought: "Suppose the ankle does not heal completely or correctly? What if lameness follows? It would hinder me in my work, which requires a great deal of walking. Would it not be better to have a diagnosis? In case I should not be able to work, I would need the compensation from the insurance company." All of these suggestions were met by my standing firm with the truth that man is spiritual and perfect, and that he cannot fall from his place as the reflection of God and be involved in an accident. The healing was soon apparent, and the ankle is perfect in every way.

I am thankful for the Reading Rooms, which have meant so much to me when I have been alone in strange cities. I am grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her wisdom and foresight in providing for the many activities of the Christian Science movement, which is bringing progress and understanding to the world.—(Mrs) Helen M. Laing, Wausau, Wisconsin.
