The first healing in our family...

The first healing in our family of five was of diseased tonsils. A school nurse called on me to explain how badly this condition was affecting our son and said that he would not be allowed back in school after the summer holidays unless he had had the tonsils removed. I did not approve of surgical operations, as this boy had had one that was not successful, and he was already behind a term in school because of sickness. The boy had been attending a Christian Science Sunday School for a few months through the invitation of a school chum. I was very happy about this, for it was the longest period he had attended any Sunday School. He had been enrolled in several different orthodox Sunday Schools, but was unable to find satisfaction and happiness in any of them.

My mother, who was visiting me at the time, urged me to have Christian Science treatment, as she had heard of many cases of healing through this Science. The next day I took the boy to a practitioner. She listened patiently to my story and then invited me to attend church services. She also showed me how to study the Lesson-Sermon, as given in the Christian Science Quarterly.

During the summer our family was so busy attending the services or the Sunday School in a branch church, studying the Lesson-Sermon, and working out other problems with the loving help of the practitioner that I forgot all about the boy's tonsils. It was not until fall, when he brought his report card home from school—for the first time it showed a hundred per cent in health—that I realized he had been healed. He has been in excellent health since and was able to make up the term he had lost.

Our infant daughter was healed of a bowel obstruction. She had been treated by doctors and had had periodic relief, but the condition kept returning and each time seemed worse. My husband, not understanding Christian Science at the time, was afraid to trust the child to God alone, thinking that some material aid should be applied as well. However, he finally agreed to rely solely on Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." After we took this stand, the error yielded immediately, and there has never been any recurrence. Several relatives and friends became students of Christian Science through witnessing these two healings.

I experienced a most harmonious and painless childbirth. Fallen arches were healed after three months' consecrated study, through which I came to realize that the true selfhood of the relative from whom I was supposed to have inherited this ailment was spiritual and perfect.

Many healings have taken place in our family, some through our own understanding of Christian Science and others through the loving help of practitioners. Measles disappeared overnight; paralysis was healed in one hour; what would most likely have been diagnosed as appendicitis yielded completely in three hours; an infected finger opened and drained when gratitude was expressed actively, proving Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 3): "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech." Burns have been healed instantaneously, and painless dental work has been experienced. Christian Science has met our every need physically and mentally.

I was divinely directed to a consecrated teacher of Christian Science, from whom I received class instruction. This I count one of my greatest blessings, together with branch church membership, which affords us so many opportunities for spiritual growth. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and for each one who is doing his part, large or small, to support the Cause of Christian Science.
