"WHEN THINE EYE IS SINGLE"

The supremacy of the Mind which is Spirit, God, is explained in Christian Science". In order to be Christian Scientists we must accept this. We cannot have two masters. We cannot believe in two powers. We must not accept the falsity that there is either matter or mortal mind, because as the Apostle James writes (James 1:8), "A double minded man is unstable in all his ways." We must think consistently from the basis of the one Mind and of Spirit as the only substance.

Moses accomplished great things after he discerned God as the great I AM. Several happenings caused him also to see human existence in a different light. Among these were the changing of his rod into a serpent and back again into a rod and the sudden appearance of leprosy on his hand and its instantaneous cure. On page 321 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says, "When, led by wisdom to cast down his rod, he saw it become a serpent. Moses fled before it; but wisdom bade him come back and handle the serpent, and then Moses' fear departed. In this incident was seen the actuality of Science. Matter was shown to be a belief only. The serpent, evil, under wisdom's bidding, was destroyed through understanding divine Science, and this proof was a staff upon which to lean. The illusion of Moses lost its power to alarm him, when he discovered that what he apparently saw was really but a phase of mortal belief." With this new understanding Moses was equipped to deliver his people from bondage.

With his knowledge of God as supreme, Moses had all the power there is on his side. Any seeming opposition he encountered was proved powerless by his realization of the omnipotence of God. Our Leader explains this scientific method when she writes (ibid., p. 469),"The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind —called devil or evil—is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality." No mortal supposition can keep the realization of the truth of the one Mind from operating as divine law to bring about the accomplishment of anything that is right. The Bible records God's words (Josh. 1:5), "There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."
