My first healing, which was on the first of September, 1897, stands out as the most momentous occurrence of my life, for it dates the quieting of my disturbed Christian life. During my illness of four years' duration and several years prior thereto, I questioned many creeds and teachings of orthodox churches. I could not believe that a good, intelligent, and all-powerful God created conditions and things as we see them, full of misery and blight in one way or another.

The physical manifestation was a dropsical condition, claimed by materia medica to be the result of inherited weaknesses which had become aggravated by the climate of the state in which I was living. I was told that I might live a month, but that I should be prepared to go any minute. Then we heard of Christian Science.

The dear woman whom my husband and I called on for help was one of three Christian Scientists in the town, and she had been healed just three years before of asthma. She told us that she was not a practitioner and that she did not know where to send us for treatment in Christian Science; but she agreed to do what she could to help. She asked me if I believed in God, and when I said that I did, she asked me if I believed that God could heal me. I replied that of course He could if He wanted to. She said: "Now, you just remember that God can heal you. It will be my part to know that He wants to." I promised not to use medical remedies.

I did not expect relief from the Christian Science treatment, but since I had always tried to be obedient to my doctor's directions, I felt I should follow those given me by the one who was trying to help me in Christian Science. I retired early that night and went to sleep at once. I awoke in the morning free, well, and happy beyond words. There was no pain or discord of any kind. Also there was no period of convalescence, and I went about my household duties in complete freedom. There has been no further manifestation of the difficulty. I am well and strong, and through my application of Christian Science I can now live in any climate.

I have studied Science and Health and the other writings of Mrs. Eddy diligently since my first healing, and I became a member of The Mother Church in 1898.
