It would be hard, indeed, to find an adult who has not heard of the atomic bomb and its destructive potentialities, or who would not rejoice in knowing how to render it powerless. With undeniable divine authority Christian Science provides the answer for this world-perplexing problem.

Viewed from a human standpoint, the problem of the atomic bomb calls for the control of both the product and its user. From a metaphysical standpoint one factor alone demands restraint, namely the carnal, or mortal, mind. This fact is readily appreciated when the definitions of matter and mortal mind, as found on pages 591 and 592 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, are studied, understood, and accepted. One who understands God as the only Mind sees how a suppositional mind with all its evil potentialities of sin, disease, corruption, and destruction can be controlled and overcome through the realization and demonstration of the scientific fact that Mind, God, is the only source, origin, condition, intelligence, cause, action, force, energy, power, and substance.

Because of her spiritual enlightenment and fidelity, citizens of the world owe profound gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, who some sixty years ago proclaimed in her God-inspired writings that "atomic action is Mind, not matter" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 190). And she further averred, "It is neither the energy of matter, the result of organization, nor the outcome of life infused into matter." Consequently, this new weapon is just one more educated belief of mortal mind that energy and power can be expressed in or through matter. Moreover, it coincides with the belief or lie that mortal man is evolved by atomic force. Reiterating the teachings of Christ Jesus, the master Metaphysician and Scientist, Christian Science demonstrates that Mind is the only creator and self-existent power.

In a most interesting chapter entitled "There is no Matter," found in her book "Unity of Good," Mrs. Eddy makes the following statement under the sub-heading "Force" (p. 35): "I ask, Which was first, matter or power? That which was first was God, immortal Mind, the Parent of all. But God is Truth, and the forces of Truth are moral and spiritual, not physical. They are not the merciless forces of matter." And she continues: "What then are the so-called forces of matter? They are the phenomena of mortal mind, and matter and mortal mind are one; and this one is a misstatement of Mind, God." Then she enunciates: "A molecule, as matter, is not formed by Spirit; for Spirit is spiritual consciousness alone. Hence this spiritual consciousness can form nothing unlike itself, Spirit, and Spirit is the only creator. The material atom is an outlined falsity of consciousness, which can gather additional evidence of consciousness and life only as it adds lie to lie."

A dictionary in defining atomism says, "Many thinkers have endeavored to interpret atomism from a psychical point of view, treating the atoms either as mind stuff or as composed of sense elements." In the light of this statement we can see how the atomic bomb symbolizes the combined destructive, elemental material nature of mortal "mind stuff," such as hate, malice, greed, revenge, temper, lawlessness, fear, stubbornness, sensuality, atheism, and godless policies.

These sharp phases of mortal thought, the counterfeiting forces of evil or matter, also appear as electricity, dust storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, and disease. Hence their control and prevention can be accomplished only through the application of pure metaphysics. Thus without exception every problem can be solved by Christian Science with the infinite calculus of Spirit, because Christ, Truth, overcomes and destroys mortal "mind stuff" with the power and substance of infinite Mind—purity, loving-kindness, calmness, justice, law, and righteousness.

To humanity's questions, "Will war or peace potentials win out? Will atomic energy be a weapon or a servant?" Christian Science responds that the final answer will be determined by mankind's choice between carnal-mindedness and spirituality. How comforting to know that the adoption and practice of spiritual qualities, such as holiness, serenity, obedience, humility, discernment, and trustworthiness, prohibit and destroy carnal-mindedness. In this way spirituality gives one dominion over the merciless forces of matter—the phenomena of suppositional mortal mind —and matter becomes his servant, not his master.

Throughout her writings on divine Science Mrs. Eddy exposes the dangers and ill-effects of mortal mind's erroneous thinking and tells how to overcome and prevent them. Christian Science explains and proves that every problem in human existence can be solved by metaphysics only.

Christlikeness alone enables humanity to live in unity, peace, health, harmony, and freedom. Acknowledgment of God's spiritual universe and creation, wherein man, made in His image and likeness, forever embodies and expresses divine qualities only, is the basis of Christian Science teaching. It only awaits humankind's adoption and utilization for individual and collective salvation here and now. Spiritual understanding and its demonstration alone can end for all time and for all peoples the belief that material atoms constitute existence, life, power, intelligence, reality.

Fundamental Christianity, as taught and practiced by the Master, Christ Jesus, and reiterated in Christian Science, is the only basis upon which men and nations can live and work together. Knowledge of the kingdom of God, good, within us, demonstrated, is the spiritual force which heals, reforms, redeems, and unites men and nations through Christlikeness.

The supremacy of divine Mind will be seen in its utter obliteration of evil thoughts individually and collectively through the realization of the omnipresent Christ-power. The evil thinker and doer can no more evade or escape the inevitable punishment for his wrong thinking and doing than he can prevent the sun from shining. Evil thinking cannot organize or prosper, because it is a product of carnal-mindedness and must yield to the irresistible Christ, Truth.

Though mortals are being forced gradually to learn that God, Spirit, is the only creator, it is not necessary for them to take the hard, experimental, and fearful way first. Through knowledge of divine Science mortals can finally reject and overcome the entire material theory of atomism. The understanding that the real man is spiritual and eternal, the effect of one universal cause, completely destroys the assumption and false claim of mortal mind that matter is the basis of true existence, that atoms constitute reality, and that man is material and evolved by atomic force. Moreover, by refusing to honor matter with intelligence, life, existence, and power, humankind are experiencing release from sin and sickness and are being healed of all manner of disease by divine Science.

Mrs. Eddy discerned that the need was so great for spiritual enlightenment regarding atomism that she included in the subjects for the Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly, "Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?" A prayerful study of this Lesson will aid the earnest seeker to overcome his own and the world's fears about atomic force.

The Master said substantially that the end of Satan, his bondage, inventions, organizations, destructions, and wars, cannot come until "this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations" (Matt. 24:14). Mankind must learn that Spirit is the only Life, the only existence, consciousness, power, cause, effect, and activity. Then they will cease to believe in the Adam-dream. Not until mortals learn that God's attributes constitute true substance, government, and reality will they cease to worship, love, or fear matter.

Progress is being made. Multitudes are rejoicing that Christ's Christianity, or Christian Science, ensures a true knowledge of God, man, and substance, freedom from domination, and the enjoyment of permanent peace, health, and abundance for all mankind. Beautiful healings result from Christian Science treatment when the oneness, allness, and activity of the divine Mind are realized.

Well may humanity rejoice that Christian Science teaches and demonstrates that Mind-power is supreme in the material realm as well as in the spiritual. Knowledge and demonstration of infinite intelligence confer dominion over everything in so-called physical existence. Man, who embodies only the qualities of divine Mind, reflects dominion over all the earth.

Christian Science is forever available with its knowledge, health, harmony, and permanent peace for all mankind to understand and experience. Through the strict application of its spiritual rules and laws every human and world-perplexing problem can be solved with blessings for all.
