A GIFT FROM LOVE

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Freddy and his father and mother were Christian Scientists. They all had often been healed through prayer as taught in Christian Science, and his parents wanted Freddy himself to learn how to apply the truth.

Now they were wise and understanding parents, and they remembered that when Freddy wanted to learn to ride a bicycle they did not climb on it themselves and ride it and just talk to Freddy about how to ride. Oh, no! They helped Freddy climb on the shiny new bicycle, holding him on while he got the "feel" and learned to balance himself. And when Freddy fell off, his father just praised him for the way he hopped back on, even when error was saying that falling off did not feel good. After some days of practice Freddy could ride on the driveway all by himself.

Then he learned about traffic laws and the rules for children riding on town streets. By this time he could go pedaling down the street steady and free, with the wind billowing his jacket as he rode. He loved the feel of the wind, the swaying motion, and the way things whizzed by. He thought, "This must be the way a bird feels as it soars and swoops in the sky, not a bit afraid."
