The testimonies of healing that...
The testimonies of healing that are published in the Sentinel are particularly helpful to me in my own experiences, and recently I had one more occasion to be grateful for these proofs of the healing power of Christian Science.
Whenever the suggestion of so-called children's diseases presents itself, the false notion that their children must have these diseases is often passively accepted by parents. At one time I too submitted to this mistaken notion, and our small daughter had whooping cough and measles along with the other children. Having confidence in Christian Science, I had no fear of these diseases and accepted them only as minor annoyances, but I did not actively work against them. However, when a third round of disease invaded our neighborhood, I realized that God did not require anyone to suffer these discomforts and that therefore it was unnecessary to put up with them any longer. I saw that this was a fine opportunity to demonstrate Christian Science and strengthen my understanding, and that this was also an opportunity to prove to other parents the invalidity of material laws. It was in this spirit that I kept denying the reality of chicken pox. I had the sincere desire not to be different or to show off, but to let God's power be shown through my example that others might learn more readily to lean on Truth.
At a time when the suggestion of this disease seemed particularly strong a testimony in the Sentinel was very helpful to me. It was written by a mother who had demonstrated the power of Truth over measles. One day when almost every other child but mine in our neighborhood had had chicken pox, the teacher called me and said that our daughter was not feeling well and that she would drive her home after school. I immediately began to realize that it was right for God's power to be demonstrated, not only for the good of our child, but for the benefit of all, and that it would be; and I turned once more to the testimony in the Sentinel for reassurance. When the child came home, she was not sick, but blooming with health and eager to play outside with her friends.
Several weeks later she began to cough and came home from school with a burning fever and a bad cold. Once again the experience of the other mother in combating measles was referred to and was most helpful to me, but the fever continued. All during that night whenever she coughed or stirred I clung to the truth that God was right there, and the fear finally left me. Our daughter was up at the usual time the next morning, the fever was gone, and once again she was her rightful self. As a result of this experience, two neighbors, who know that we are Christian Scientists, expressed their interest in this healing. They had seen God's protecting power demonstrated.—(Mrs.) Gail I. Bakken, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
