About twenty years ago at the...
About twenty years ago at the difficult birth of our twin sons, it was considered a miracle that we all survived, and the case was written up in the annals of medical history by the attending specialist, who was president of the medical board. Now, as a student of Christian Science, I know that strong faith in God brought us all through. For we reasoned that since we had come through so much, surely God meant us all to be happy together. This thought called me back when it was believed that I was passing on and guarded our babies through many nights of watchful prayer. At this time it did not occur to us to ask for Christian Science, although the words, "God is Love," seemed to be before me constantly. Surely God was preparing me for it.
The period of convalescence with its attending expenses of specialists, nurses, and special hospitalization, wiped out our savings. Then there followed within the next year a se ries of thefts, fire, a bank crash, and uncollectibel accounts, which resulted in the loss of our business. My mother suffered a nervous breakdown and my own strength had not returned, although I was under constant medical care, submitting to three blood injections a week. I could not care for my home duties and my babies, and since I had little expection of ever having normal strength, I found myself growing weaker and in a state of confusion and fear.
Altogether discouraged and in great mental anguish, I asked this doctor what he knew of Christian Science, and he replied that he knew it to be good and that it might help me, for medical science could do no more. He said that I was on the verge of a complete collapse and that at least Science should give me a brighter outlook. I went from his office to that of a practitioner, and never shall I forget the beautiful truths that were told me. I had been a Bible student all my life, searching in many churches for the fulfillment of God's promises, but what a joyful message it was to hear that the calamities that had befallen us were not sent from God, because He sends His children only good. I was told to be grateful, and as this gratitude grew in my thought, my health improved accordingly. Each false claim has been repudiated, and I now enjoy more strength and have more physical endurance than ever before in my life, as I had always been considered a delicate child, having been taken out of school one year. My weight is now normal, and my entire appearance has changed.
Shortly after I received my first copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and both my husband and I were studying, we witnessed our first proof of this great truth in the instantaneous healing of one of our babies of fever and delirium simply by our realizing the healing power of the Lord's Prayer and its spiritual interpretation (Science and Health, pp. 16, 17). I knew then that this was the truth which I had been seeking.
When our babies were attacked with whooping cough, the practitioner who had helped us was absent form the city, and we called in the family physician. Upon the practitioner's return we took our stand completely for Christian Science and poured the medicine down the drain. From that moment we have never resorted to medical aid in any form, but have placed our radical reliance on God. The physician called to see the children and was amazed to see them completely healed, and he gave full credit to Christian Science. The man sent to remove the quarantine sign said he had never before removed a sign so quickly. Since then the children have experienced many immediate healings of measles, chicken pox, mumps, pneumonia, dislocations, and a possible hernia. Having attended the Sunday School since the age of three, both young men rely wholly on Christian Science and follow its teachings. They have recently become members of The Mother Church and of a branch church and are active in a Christian Science university organization.
An outstanding healing occurred while I was working forty-eight hours a week for the Government during the war. I seemed to be attacked with a heart condition, but through the consecrated work of practitioner and my own effort to see my true spiritual selfhood, I worked every day and finally realized my freedom when a rigid routine physical examination showed no trace of the difficulty.
Throughout the years our family has had many healings and experienced much protection through the absolute knowledge of the one, ever-present Mind, and a growing understanding of true substance has unfolded the limitless bounty of God's goodness to all mankind.
I am grateful that I early applied for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, so that I could avail myself of the great privilege of serving our Cause in many different capacities. Class instruction has been an outstanding blessing and guide for the greater unfoldment of good in my own life and for others whom I can better help. For all the many channels for good that our beloved
Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has so wisely and lovingly established for us in the Manual of The Mother Church for the benefit and healing of all mankind, I can never be grateful enough. I pray that I may live so that my light will shine and I may be worthy of the name Christian Scientist.—(Mrs.) Helen M. Lutz, St. Louis, Missouri.
I am happy to verify the testimony of healings related by my wife and to express gratitude also for the many proofs of the healing power of Christian Science which I have experienced. The healing of a broken thumb and a broken finger without having them set and the clearing of an irritating skin disorder of many years' standing are only a few instances of the value of Christian Science.
I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and for class instruction.—Vincent J. Lutz.
