I should like to express my gratitude for the many proofs I have had of the healing and regenerating power of Christian Science.

My first healing came about soon after I took up the study of this Science. For over twenty years I had been a very heavy smoker, but after I had studied the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, for a few days, this habit entirely left me. I shall never cease to be grateful for this, my first healing in Christian Science, because it proved to me at the very outset the truth of the saying of Jesus (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The little understanding of the truth which I had gained from my study of Science had indeed set me free from the bondage of this habit, to which I had been subject for so long.

Christian Science has entirely changed my thinking. It has changed my concept of man as material, subject to sin, sorrow, and suffering, to man as spiritual idea, God's child, made in His image and likeness, subject only to good and reflecting Godlike qualities.

At one time, through lifting a heavy sack, I sprained my back. With difficulty I managed to carry on my work for a day or two; then I was forced to go to bed. The following morning I tried to get up, but found I could not stand, the pain in my back was so intense. I got back into bed, and my wife telephoned for help from a Christian Science practitioner. I was able to get up two days later, and was back at business within a week, completely healed.

Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 355), "To strike out right and left against the mist, never clear the vision; but to lift your head above it, is a sovereign panacea." I had been fighting this claim and making a reality of it, when what I really needed was to rise above it and get a clearer vision of man as God's idea. When this had been accomplished, the healing came.

On another occasion it was my privilege to act as deputy Second Reader. On the day before I was to read, a cold developed. I worked about this as we are taught to do in Christian Science and tried to realize that nothing could prevent me from filling my post, but I did not seem to get any better; in fact, my throat became very sore. About 4 a.m. on Sunday I awoke and could scarcely speak. I continued knowing the truth about this condition, my wife helping me, with the result that I was able to carry out my duty without any difficulty, my voice being quite normal.

I should like to say how grateful I am to our Leader for all that she did in discovering Christian Science and giving to the world Science and Health, so that anyone may learn its wonderful healing truths.—Richard W. Proctor, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England.
