Finds God, home, and supply. Healed of severe gastritis

It is about time I testified to the heading power of Christian Science. I suffered from a catarrhal condition resulting in severe gastritis; I was allowed to eat few things, and even after taking every precaution, I suffered to the extent that I would lie in spasms for half a day. I also had paralysis of the bowels, frequent severe sick headaches, and female trouble. I had been in bed for a long time, and various doctors admitted that they had exhausted their resources.

A friend sent a Christian Science practitioner to visit me. I knew nothing of this Science. The practitioner asked me to read the ninety-first Psalm. The words, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty," stayed with me. She sent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. That night I read until I fell asleep. I had suffered for years from insomnia, but that night I rested like a child and awoke the next morning well and happy. The peace "which passeth all understanding" rested upon me, and joy too deep for words transformed my life. My prayer was answered, for I had found God.

The physicians had stated that I could not carry another child. Later, when I found I was going to have one, I saw it was up to me to prove that I was a Christian Scientist. On page 192 of Science and Health I read: "We are Christian Scientists, only as we quit our reliance upon that which is false and grasp the true. We are not Christian Scientists until we leave all for Christ." Science and Health was my only physician until thirty minutes before an almost painless childbirth. I did my housework up to the time I was confined and was in perfect health. I was up the following day and going everywhere in two weeks.

The children have been protected from many childhood ailments and have been healed of mumps in less than a day and of measles in less than a night. One child accidentally ate some lye. Quickly the swelling left the child's lips as I held to the thought that "now is the accepted time"—now is God ever present to sustain us and to work out His plan through us.

I was left alone to support my children and myself, although I had never worked a day outside my own home. But I said, "God has never failed," and listening for the still, small voice, I heard this message from Science and Health (p. 9): "Dost thou 'love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind'?" and the preceding sentence, "There is a cross to be taken up before we can enjoy the fruition of our hope and faith." I asked God, "What is this cross?" And the answer came clearly. "It is giving up all belief in and reliance on materiality, and the constant proving of the substance and perfection of Spirit."

The Bible says, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." "These things" have been added and are being added each day. Many demonstrations of supply have been made, an outstanding one being the acquisition of my present home when houses seemed practically unobtainable, unless bought, and I had no money. I paid for my house in six months; the contract was for twenty years.

I am grateful for all these and other blessings. For the steps of progress marked by membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and later in a Christian Science Society, as well as the privilege of class instruction, I do rejoice! I am grateful to God for Jesus, who demonstrated the Christ, Truth; also for our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who proved this truth and set forth so dearly the spiritual meaning of the Christ in her writings that any sincere student may prove its presence for himself.— (Mrs.) Carabel Brooks Newsome, Bridgeton, New Jersey.
