That the Passer-By May Read

A man inquired about the copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures'" by Mary Baker Eddy which was on display in our window. He thanked the librarian for the information and went out. Later he returned to ask if he could purchase a copy of The Christian Science Journal, which was also in the window. He expressed gratitude for the window displays and told the librarian he had received a great deal of good from reading" them. When he said he would like to own a copy of Science and Health but felt he could not afford it just then, he was immediately told of the facilities of our lending library. He borrowed the textbook and at the end of two weeks returned it and bought a copy. This man reads at every window display.

After we had worked with Mrs. Eddy's statement of the purpose of the Heralds, "to proclaim the universal activity and availability of Truth" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353), a wider concept of all the translations prompted use of Heralds and translations in window displays. The day we placed the Spanish Science and Health in a display a woman unknown to the librarian came in and asked to see it. She took it into the study room and read for about an hour, then brought it to the counter and purchased it.

Another day an Italian pamphlet was included in a display, and a man who had been leading at the window came in and asked to see it. He read a bit here and there and asked if we had other literature in Italian. We snowed him the three leaflets in that language. He bought all four. He seemed interested and responsive, so The librarian took him into the study room, showed him the various books by Mary Baker Eddy, and, giving him the textbook, invited him to read while she took care of a visitor who had just entered the salesroom. He read a little over an hour, then returned to the librarian and asked to buy Science and Health and a matching Bible. He has attended all our services regularly ever since.

Sometime later, when all five Heralds were displayed, a man came in to ask how much the Spanish Herald was. He purchased one, and as she slipped it into an envelope the librarian asked if he had ever previously visited a Christian Science Reading Room. He was quite interested in a display of translated pamphlets, so she selected the three in Spanish to show him. He promptly said he wanted to buy all three. He was shown The Christian Science Monitor and told that occasionally an article in that was reprinted in Spanish. An issue with a Spanish translation was shown to him, and he asked if he might buy that. He went into the study room for a while, and when he came out he asked how much the Spanish translation of Science and Health cost. He said that some day he would like to buy one but not then. He was most appreciative of the literature he had purchased and of the librarian's answers to his questions about Christian Science.

This Reading Room is in an office building in the heart of the business district. We have been able to make it better known recently by placing a well-designed display case just outside the entrance to this building. The owner gave us permission to do this, emphasizing the value of such entrance display space. The new case is seen by everyone entering the building. The librarian is at the case only when she changes it, but she has been told at these times that as many as a hundred pause during a day to read briefly from the opened books. A young woman employed in one of the offices in the building made a special visit to the Reading Room to say she was happy the space was given for that purpose. She spoke appreciatively of the type of literature displayed in the case.

In order to make our Reading Room, which connects with our church edifice, better known, we have had a display case especially designed and constructed for displays of Christian Science literature and have obtained space for it in the heart of the shopping district. Two sites for the case were offered by businessmen of other religious denominations, and no rental fee was asked. The case is a complete unit and can be removed and reinstalled at minimum cost. It is lighted at night, and many have been observed reading from the opened literature. Increased attendance at our church services since its installation may be traced to this downtown display and the fact that the invitation to attend the services and use the Reading Room appears in the case, together with the hours of both.

Our Reading Room is in the church edifice, but we have been able to extend its invitation and make its facilities better known to the general public by having an outdoor, time-lighted display case where many pass each day. More than a few have felt free to enter the Reading Room and inquire about Christian Science after reading at this display case.
