How to break down prejudice and prove Truth irresistible

MIND GOVERNS MAN

The Science of Christianity which the Master, Christ Jesus, taught and demonstrated is being proved practical for our time by faithful Christian Scientists the world over. These devout followers of the Master are healing disease, overcoming want, and comforting those who need it. They are seeing the need for demonstrating the fact that but one power, divine Love, God, is governing the universe, and are learning more and more to look to Him in every human need. Jesus taught the importance of recognizing this fact when he said (John 5:30), "I can of mine own self do nothing." He knew that his mighty deeds were accomplished naturally through the operation of the governing divine Principle.

"Mind's control over the universe, including man, is no longer an open question, but is demonstrable Science." So writes Mary Baker Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 171). Our Leader reveals that Principle is God, that the universe and man are His reflection, therefore spiritual. The universe which Mind completely controls, includes all that is real and spiritual and nothing unreal, mortal, or material.

Christian Science makes clear to the student the importance of recognizing God, Life. Truth, Spirit, as the only cause, and that which Spirit evolves, the real man and the universe, as the only effect. Man is defined by Mrs. Eddy in the Glossary in Science and Health as follows (p. 591): "The compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind." One demonstrating Christian Science finds it imperative to work faithfully to gain a better understanding of God and His man, whether the problem be the overcoming of physical infirmity, the restoration of right activity in business, or the healing of resentment toward Christian Science. The regular and consistent study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings brings to the seeker a higher understanding of Mind's all-inclusiveness and the consequent proof of the nothingness of error or discord. The result of his efforts in this direction is commensurate with his progress in going up higher in the scale of true being.

The Apostle Paul's clear understanding of the omnipotence of Mind to control and save was evidenced on his journey to Rome when his boat was shipwrecked. His spiritual insight of divine Love's omnipresence was conclusive, for all of the two hundred and seventy-six persons aboard the ill-fated ship were saved. He addressed his shipmates thus (Acts 27:23–25): "For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, saying, Fear not, Paul; ... God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me." And we read (verse 44), "And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land."

The Psalmist joyfully declared (Ps. 40:5), "Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward." A Christian Scientist had occasion gratefully to acknowledge divine Love's tender, unerring guidance and right government in overcoming a trying situation. His dearly beloved parents were grossly misinformed regarding Christian Science. Their son's effort to explain that God, divine Love, Mind, alone directs, guides, and guards all His children and that a right understanding of this truth silences discord, only seemed to increase their unhappiness. The young student spent much time pondering Scriptural references and realizing Mind's allness and readiness to unfold and reveal the truth. He saw that man, divine Love's idea, cannot be resentful, distrustful, or ignorant of the truth and that in Love's realm all is ever spiritually harmonious, loving, intelligent.

The wisdom of letting Mind unfold its government of man was revealed to this student, and Paul's encouraging statement was proved true (Rom. 8:28), "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God." The unfoldment was natural and beautiful. Mrs. Eddy assures us in Science and Health (p. 295): "God creates and governs the universe, including man. The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them."

During this testing period a number of healings in Christian Science came to the attention of the parents. Their misunderstanding of and resentment toward what they believed Christian Science to be completely vanished, and they subsequently attended and enjoyed the Sunday services and Wednesday evening testimony meetings.

Here someone may ask what the connection is between the son's study of the Scriptures, his realization gained in Christian Science of God's government of man and the universe, and the reversal of his parents' thought regarding Christian Science. The answer is this: truth, love, harmony, joy, and peace are spiritual qualities, which are eternally established in divine Mind and expressed by man. As the son held vigorously and persistently to these facts of being, to Mind's ever-present government of man, the false belief that God's ideas express contempt of the truth disappeared. Error's resistance to the truth was proved to be absolutely nil. A false concept of man cannot remain in one's experience when the facts of God's government of man and the universe dominate consciousness.

Regardless of what the human problem may seem to be, healing comes with the understanding that in Mind's universe everything is harmoniously governed, and that man is endowed with Love's blessings and empowered with Spirit's omnipotence.
