Protection received from contagious diseases

I cannot adequately relate within this limited space the many blessings I have received through the study and application of Christian Science.

The seed of this great truth was planted early in my experience by my first-grade teacher, who was a guest in the home of my parents. I was not aware of the import of the discussions between my teacher and my mother, but in the following years, when I passed a Christian Science church on the way to the church attended by my family, I resolved to attend that church when I had the privilege of choosing.

It was not until I found myself a young widow with two small sons, who looked to me for their human needs, and I knew not where to turn, that I listened to the still small voice. One Sunday morning a voice seemed to say clearly, "Now is the time to choose." That day my sons and I attended services in a near-by branch Church of Christ, Scientist. The subject of the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly was "God." Here was the answer to my years of inquiry. This was over twenty years ago. Since then Christian Science has been our only physician. We have had many healings of diseases and results of accidents and, most significant of all, healings of bad traits of character.

Soon after our first attendance at a Church of Christ, Scientist, I was offered a position in a large medical institution, which I accepted. I was subjected to all the laws contingent on employment in this profession. With the help of Christian Science practitioners, I experienced joyous release from fear of contagious diseases. I learned to turn to God for guidance in any situation and to use His ever-present help. When I left this position at the end of ten years' service, the heads of departments signing my release were amazed when they found I had no patient's file number or record of treatment during that time.

My gratitude is boundless for the blessings my sons received from attending the Christian Science Sunday School. Childhood diseases were met almost instantly. They had little contact with materia medica until they entered the Army in World War II. During these trying years we were all beautifully sustained. The younger son was a combat infantryman and spent two hundred and sixty-seven days in actual combat, being one of eight in his outfit to return from the Battle of the Bulge.

At the height of the European invasion we received a telegram reporting him seriously wounded. "Pray without ceasing" (I Thess. 5:17), was the guidepost day and night following this. At the end of seven days a second telegram was received telling us of his complete recovery and return to duty after twenty-four hours of hospitalization. At this point I wish to express gratitude for the unselfish, consecrated work of our Wartime Ministers.

Study of the Bible and Science and Health and the other writings by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has brought to light God and man's relationship to Him. Evidence of the far-reaching influence of The Mother Church and its activities was brought to me when it became necessary to change residence to an isolated area. Having lived for many years within walking distance of a branch church and a Reading Room, with the privilege of serving in both, I suddenly felt the lack of activity. This was immediately dispelled by turning unreservedly to Truth. The Christian Science periodicals were promptly forwarded to us. These we shared with neighbors who were interested, and soon the word was spread and we found much activity in small hamlets.

To God, to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, to Mrs. Eddy for her gift to the world of the Comforter, I give endless gratitude. For the blessing of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and for class instruction, I thank God.—(Mrs.) Irma Vance Mason, Wrightwood, California.
