Many diseases yield to Science treatment

Since the Christ-light came into my life I have been strengthened, comforted, refreshed, and blessed. In Isaiah we read (9:2), "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined." Whenever I read this verse, it recalls my first healing in Christian Science.

Before my healing I had become much depressed, weak, constantly filled with fear, existing mostly on a kind of cracker, or biscuit, made from the recipe of a famous physician, and I was suffering from five diseases. I was growing weaker every year and was fast drifting into invalidism. I had tried many remedies and employed many physicians, but in vain. So with little hope of being benefited, I went to see a Christian Science practitioner. "Man's extremity" proved to be "God's opportunity." One thing which helped me while at the practitioner's home was my love for and my knowledge of the Bible. When a little child, I learned long chapters and often recited them to my mother. As the practitioner quoted wonderful verses from the Word of God, a great relief and a loosening of the tension under which I had been suffering came to me.

On my way home I thought, "A great release has come to my head, and I am healed of those headaches." When I sat down to dinner, and my husband asked me what he should serve me, I replied: "Today I am going to eat the meat and vegetables which the family are going to eat. They will not hurt me." From that day to this, I have eaten everything with perfect comfort, seasoning my meals with gratitude.

I soon found that I had been healed completely of headaches, dyspepsia, liver trouble, nervous exhaustion, and sinking spells, accompanied by palpitation. The principal cause of my diseases was fear of God's will. I thought that our God, in His inscrutable wisdom, sometimes sent disaster upon the world and sometimes sent blessings. When this error was corrected, health sprang forth speedily, as the Bible puts it (Isa. 58: 8). We have had many other healings in our family through our own work and through the work of practitioners.

One evening at least twenty-five years ago I was going to be alone until late. Soon after the members of my family had left, a strong sense of danger came to me. I began immediately to work, using the ninety-first and one hundred and twenty-first Psalms and an article entitled "Angels" found in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 306) by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. I continued to work until four o'clock in the morning, when I thought, I can do no more; I must leave the rest to God. Then I immediately fell asleep. About half past six in the morning my husband and I awakened to find smoke in our room. We ran down two flights of stairs to the laundry and found that the gas iron had been left running for twelve hours. It had burned through the covering on the ironing board, through the inch and a quarter board, and deep into that which supported the board, but had only burned a hole six by eight inches. There were little flames close to the iron and encircling it. As we stood in amazement, the flames shot up to four or five inches in height. The protection we had experienced brought a rich blessing to me, for it greatly increased my trust in God's presence and loving care.

For the entire Christian Science movement, for the words and works of Christ Jesus, for Mrs. Eddy's great lifework, for the rich blessings of class instruction and yearly association meetings, for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, for the privilege of working in church activities, for the church services, and for the Christian Science periodicals, I am profoundly grateful to God.

The following is added in the hope that it may help someone to press on: My husband and I are beyond the fourscore mark and are looking forward to fresh inspiration and unfoldment.—(Mrs.) Mary Willson Allen, Hartford, Connecticut.
