Better view of man's coexistence with God heals ills based on belief of separation

THE UNITY OF GOD AND MAN

An understanding of the oneness of God and of man's oneness with God as His reflection is the world's great need today. Only this understanding can break the mortal dream of separation from the presence and power of infinite good. This dream is best defined as the Adam-dream, for, as Christian Science reveals, it is the Adam-man— mankind, or a kind of man—who has accepted the belief that man is separated from God.

Science also unfolds the truth of God's perfect spiritual idea, man, made in His image and likeness, as forever expressing the Father, infinite good. God and man do not have to be brought together. Man dwells in the Mind of which he is the image, or reflection. If man could be torn from Mind, this would indicate another entity, outside of infinite Mind, with the cunning and power to penetrate Mind and allure Mind's ideas by charm or deceit. This is a self-evident impossibility. Mind is infinite, One, All. There is nothing beyond infinity.

Man can no more be cut off from health, happiness, holiness, harmony, than can God. Since man is God's image, would not God have to be separated from perfection before perfection could be separated from man? If man is to experience either good or evil, God must first know it and then reflect it through His image, man. But the Bible states (Hab. 1:13), "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity." It is only the fictitious human sense of man, or mankind, which seems to itself to experience evil. This sense is destroyed by an understanding of the truth of man's being as indissolubly one with God.

God is too pure to know, feel, or experience evil. Man, as God's reflection, then, cannot know, feel, or experience evil. This basic concept of God and man and of their undisturbed relationship in the bonds of divine Science enables one to demonstrate poise when gaining the victory over evil, illusion.

Does matter appear to be torn, ruptured, broken; employment or supply cut off? Are families disunited, labor and capital striving, nations warring? These aggressive evil suggestions are presented to individual consciousness by the negative carnal mind.

The carnal mind, Paul says, is "enmity against God" (Rom. 8:7). Although it is ignorant of the existence of God, it is by its very nature opposed to God; and it would, if it could, produce separation—but between whom? Not between God and His idea, man! Its lie can only insinuate itself into the human consciousness which ignorantly and fearfully accepts it as real.

So the cure is always to understand man's at-one-ment with God. Not mortal man's at-one-ment with God, but man's! Mortal existence is itself a sense of apartness from God. Even its most beautiful aspects involve some denial of the allness of God, Spirit. But man as God's idea is forever one with God, and is therefore a whole unit, individual, indivisible, complete, and intact throughout eternity.

Isaiah said (Isa. 58:12), "And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places:... thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in." Moffatt renders that last phrase "the restorer of wrecked homes."

Yes! Christian Science is the perfect "repairer of the breach." And Christian Science is the "restorer of wrecked homes"—whether wrecked by political displacement, building shortages, unhappy marital relations, or the passing of a loved one, perhaps the family provider. All losses are adjusted, all breaks repaired, all needs met, all claims satisfied, all promises fulfilled, all distances spanned, all gulfs bridged, when motives are unselfed to do the will of God through the understanding of man's oneness with Him as His idea.

The spiritual understanding of God's law of at-one-ment destroys every type of separation from good. The result to mortal sense is restoration, while to spiritual sense it is the revelation of man's oneness with his Maker, ratification of the pre-existent unity of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Paul wrote (Rom. 8:28), "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God." Here is the metaphysical law of attraction, adhesion, cohesion, unity, harmony. Under this fundamental law every creature must co-operate with all who love God in the manifestation of good. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 427), "Immortal Mind, governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual." She also gives us, in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 129), this inspiring pronouncement of man's unity with the one God: "And how is man, seen through the lens of Spirit, enlarged, and how counterpoised his origin from dust, and how he presses to his original, never severed from Spirit!"
