Foot infection yields when truth is applied

I want to express my gratitude for a new understanding of Mrs. Eddy's reassuring words (Science and Health, p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." At one time my human need was to be freed from an infection in my right foot. It was most difficult for me to walk or even to stand upon it without intense pain. I attempted to solve the problem with the help of my husband; but as the infection began to spread rather than to disappear, I felt that I should call a practitioner. I was anxious to obtain this healing, for I desired to be in my place as a Reader at church on Sunday; also I had made reservations to make a short stay at the Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatorium at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and this visit was to start soon.

The practitioner assured me that nothing would stand in my way, and his courage strengthened me: but the infection continued to spread. I needed to be freed from the fear that being on the foot could irritate it and from discouragement caused by a delayed healing. Again the practitioner was called, and special help was asked for in order that I might fill my place the following day.

When I awoke from a peaceful night's rest, an article from The Home Forum page of The Christian Science Monitor was read aloud to me. It was entitled "Enlightened Faith" and its message so completely met my human need that I knew I would be in my place, and be there in comfort in spite of the material evidence which was demanding consideration. The following words seemed to speak out with authority: "Enlightened faith is a humble and confident trust in God, a buoyant and lively assurance that He is, that He cares for us, loving us always without cessation." The rest of the article was filled with so many wonderful truths that I read it over and over again. When time for the service came, I put on a dress shoe and stood throughout the whole hour in perfect case. In a short while the condition vanished completely.

For this article, for the clear and effective work of the practitioner, for the spiritual support and human kindnesses of my husband, and for the unceasing Love which is God, I am most grateful.

I should like to add my gratitude for all the work being carried on by each and every loyal Christian Scientist; for the spiritual atmosphere that prevails at the Benevolent Association, and for the wonderful work that every member of that organization is doing to remind the guests that Love meets every need. Like every other Christian Scientist. I feel humble and grateful to be a follower of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who labored long and tirelessly to give to the world this demonstrable Science. —(Mrs.) Nelle D. Stanley, Dothan, Alabama.

I wish to corroborate the testimony of my wife, for it was my privilege to witness the above-mentioned healing.

A more recent proof of God's goodness stands out to me. My wife had the opportunity to visit Boston, and I was to assume her work along with mine in the business college with which we are connected. Each day before beginning my work, I quietly realized the meaning of the first part of Mrs. Eddy's definition of "day" (Science and Health, p. 584), "The irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love." I held to the fact that all of the incidents of each day are already established in Mind; and surely an all-loving and wise Father would not overburden His child. Mind would unfold these ideas according to His purpose, and I could not assume a false sense of responsibility. With Principle directing, there could be only perfect harmony and order. The results were most wonderful! Both jobs were handled with more ease than I had previously handled mine alone.

I am grateful for the privilege of teaching in the Sunday School of a Christian Science Society; for a wonderful three weeks spent at the Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatorium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts; for membership in The Mother Church and in one of its branches; for the blessed privilege of class instruction; for the friends who have stood with me when the way was dark; and for the help of practitioner, wife, and family. Thank God for His faithful messenger of Truth to this age, Mary Baker Eddy.

Physical difficulty corrected after consecrated prayer

My great indebtedness to the effective healing power of Christian Science impels me to write this testimony.

This Science was first presented to our family when I was a young girl. Through the help of a Christian Science practitioner my mother experienced a healing which made a deep impression upon me. Our well-stocked medicine cabinet was quickly emptied, and Mother and I were both completely and permanently freed from dependence upon any material remedy whatsoever.

We soon found the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy to be our indispensable daily companions, and the spiritual understanding which unfolded to us through their study began to regenerate our lives. Throughout the ensuing years all the writings of Mrs. Eddy, our beloved Leader, have been studied and loved, and with the help of patient practitioners, a firm reliance upon Truth has been established which has sustained and protected me through many trying and, to material sense, fearsome difficulties.

Some time ago there was a great need for me to rise out of a physical difficulty which tried to overwhelm me with a great foreboding fear. Although I had received the consecrated help of a practitioner for two weeks, the condition did not yield, but rather seemed aggravated and almost malignant. Then one day, after a night of deep discouragement, I resolved to reach out to God as I had never done before and to leave behind all thought of the physical. With this intense desire for a high altitude of spiritual consciousness, the words "striving to enter in" came to me. I turned to the Concordances to Mrs. Eddy's writings and found this statement on page 21 of Science and Health: "If the disciple is advancing spiritually, he is striving to enter in. He constantly turns away from material sense, and looks towards the imperishable things of Spirit."

Pondering this, I prayed in part thus: "Give me, dear God, the conscious spiritual awareness of Your all-inclusive perfection." As I dwelt on this, I suddenly found that my prayer also included the word "glimpse": "Give me just a glimpse of this at-one-ment of being." Then, again by means of the Concordances, I found on page 24 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy's account of her own healing. She writes, "That short experience included a glimpse of the great fact that I have since tried to make plain to others, namely, Life in and of Spirit; this Life being the sole reality of existence." "Life in and of Spirit"—there was my answer; there the healing!

This beautiful unfoldment of Truth revealed itself to me in its entirety only after six hours or so of almost continuous prayer and self-abnegation. During these hours I knew also that I was being wonderfully supported by the work of the practitioner. The physical manifestation was immediately much less aggravated, and by the next day it was entirely corrected.

As Christian Scientists, our goal of achievement is to so spiritualize individual consciousness that we are able not only to help ourselves but to bring healing and comfort to others. This is an ambition that is worthy of our most consecrated effort and one that is a continuous source of inspiration and joy.

This testimony would not be complete without expressing deep gratitude for the many avenues of progress provided us by Mrs. Eddy.—(Miss) Dorothy Idalia Wright, New York, New York.
