ENDURING FRIENDSHIP

Last December a private garage close to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Auburn and Lewiston, Maine, caught fire and ignited the roof and wall of the church, causing damage to the extent of several thousand dollars. The pastor of the Federated Church, Lewiston, went to the scene of the fire soon after the alarm sounded and, expressing the sympathy of his congregation, offered the use of their church for Christian Science services.

During the day the pastors of two other churches signified their desire to help, saying that the facilities of their churches were gladly extended to the Scientists. The offer of the Federated Church was accepted because the edifice is approximately the size of the Christian Science church and is located a short distance away on the same street. Christian Science services were held there for seven weeks while repairs were being made on the damaged church, the Sunday services convening at two o'clock. The Wednesday evening testimony meetings did not interfere with the calendar of the Federated Church.

When the Scientists expressed a desire to pay for the use of the church, the pastor regretfully said they might share the expense of the oil, but sincerely wished that even that could be avoided. The amount asked for was doubled, and when it was paid, it was accompanied by an expression of deep appreciation for the kindness shown in the emergency. In a written reply the pastor assured the members of First Church of Christ. Scientist, that "the feeling of friendship for your fellowship is not a matter of the moment, but is enduring."

"Therefore will I deliver him"

A woman who is not a Christian Scientist was suddenly bereft of her sight in one, eve and found the other so weak that she could read but little. This was a great affliction, especially as she had been active in clubs where she was of service to others, as well as in social circles. Medical treatment brought no relief.

One Sunday morning she happened to tune the radio to the Christian Science program and decided to listen to it. In this broadcast mention was made of the healing power of the ninety-first Psalm. She had not known much about this psalm, although she was familiar with the twenty-third Psalm. Taking the new Bible that her husband had given her for Christmas, she read the ninety-first Psalm carefully. That evening at about nine o'clock her sight returned just as suddenly as it had disappeared, and she could see even more clearly than before this experience. She was so happy about it that at the next meeting of a service club to which she belongs she shared her experience with her fellow members.

The Instant Availability of Truth

A call was received by a Christian Science Worker one morning from the wife of a sergeant in the Air Forces, who said that her husband had been rushed to the Field Hospital. He was unconscious as the result of a collision in which his car was demolished. This was the only available information at the time. She was told to maintain in her thinking her husband's true position as a perfect child of God. Work in Science was taken up at once, and within three hours the Worker was informed that the sergeant had been released from the hospital after a thorough examination which proved conclusively to the doctors that nothing was wrong with him.

Evidence of Love's Practicality

A woman from war-torn Germany writes: "At first when you were sending us the many good things, I, at least, stood in awe before so much practical love, but I could not express joy. I seemed still too much terror-bound But now there has been much healing, which may be attributed in a great part to all the tender love expressed through the helping hands and hearts and thoughts of our dear Christian Science friends all over the world. Love has melted the ice, and gradually consciousness is awakening to the fact that in reality we never walked in that thorny, stony bypath of mortal mind, and gratitude and joy are unfolding."

A Satisfying Religion

A baccalaureate address delivered last June at a western university by a Christian Scientist made a deep impression on a young man employed in the chemistry department of the university. The address meant so much to him that he determined to learn more of this teaching which was so unlike the various other religions with which he was acquainted.

He made use of the library maintained by the Christian Science Organization at the university and attended the weekly testimony meeting of the organization. Through the spiritual understanding thus gained he has come to appreciate Christian Science as a religion that satisfies.
