Bobby proves what he learned in Sunday School, that error is not true and that God is Love

"HOLD ON TIGHT!"

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Bobby was five years old and went to the Christian Science Sunday School. His mother was not interested in Christian Science at the time, but his daddy attended the church service while Bobby joined the little boys in his own class. Bobby loved to go to Sunday School and learn about God.

One Sunday morning the teacher said that the Golden Text from the Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly was a very good one for little boys to learn, and she had them repeat it until each one could say it from memory. It reads (I Thess. 5:21), "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." The teacher then read a sentence which means almost the same thing from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 261): "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."

It was explained to the class that they would destroy error as they held fast to the truths about God and man which they were learning in Sunday School. Then they were asked to repeat some of the truths they had learned. One little boy said he knew that God is Love; another boy repeated the Lord's Prayer; and still another told the class that God is the only power. Bobby said that he knew that God is his Father-Mother, and that He takes care of His children.

The teacher then asked them to repeat the seven names, or synonyms, for God as Mrs. Eddy gives them in the textbook: Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, and Principle. She then explained to them that man is the reflection of every one of these seven synonyms. If you stand before a mirror, you see your own reflection in the glass. So does the real man reflect God. God's love and goodness fill all space, and there is no room for anything unlike Him, for He is All-in-all.

The teacher again turned to the textbook and read (p. 361), "As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being." The boys were then told that if they would hold fast to these truths, no matter where they were, they could prove God's tender love and care for His children. When the class period was over, the teacher said, "Next Sunday I shall ask you to repeat the Golden Text you learned today."

As the teacher entered the church the following Sunday, little Bobby was standing right inside the door waiting for her. He greeted her by saying: "I remembered what you taught us last Sunday. I thought about it all week." The teacher knew by his eagerness that Bobby had something important to tell, but she asked him to wait until the class began, so that he could share it with the other boys.

After the superintendent had rung the bell and the lesson period had begun, the teacher asked, "Now, Bobby, what did I ask you to remember last week?"

He quickly answered, "Hold on tight!" Bobby did not remember the exact words of the Golden Text which they had learned, but he knew what they meant, and—what was most important of all—he had been able to prove it.

Then he told them that one night during the week, when his daddy was away from home and after he had been put to bed, error told him that he was very sick, that his "tummy" ached and his head was hot. He did not call his mother because she did not know how to help him in Christian Science. Then he suddenly remembered that he had been taught in Sunday School to "hold on tight." He began to think about all that the teacher had told them a few days before.

Bobby thought that because he was really the reflection of God, nothing could possibly come between him and his Father-Mother God; that if God, Love, fills all space, there is no room anywhere for an ache or a hot head, and God never made them. Bobby said he tried with all his might to "hold on tight" by thinking about God and His perfect child, and in a little while he felt better and soon went to sleep. When he awoke the next morning, he was perfectly well.

Bobby told his teacher and the boys how grateful he was for this healing. But what pleased him far more was that he was able to prove what he had learned in Sunday School and show his mother how Christian Science heals. Because of all the good that came to Bobby and Daddy through Christian Science, she began to read the textbook and attend church.

Little boys and girls everywhere can prove that error is nothing and that God, good, is All, just as Bobby proved it. When error seems present and we are frightened, we feel safe when we can reach out and take hold of Mother's or Daddy's hand. Just so can we feel safe by holding firmly to God, by knowing that He is almighty and present everywhere. God embraces His child in His love and cares for him, for He is his Father-Mother.

By knowing these truths and holding on tight to them, we can "prove all things" just as Bobby did.
