I have been a student of Christian Science...
I have been a student of Christian Science for over twenty years and daily grow more grateful to its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy.
Christian Science first interested me by its logical interpretation of the Bible, making clear and acceptable many hitherto rejected aspects, particularly the crucifixion, ascension, and atonement of Jesus. It was not, however, until I needed physical healing and obtained it through a more thorough reading of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, that I became an active student.
I have since had many proofs of the healing power of Truth. In 1939 I was healed of a fractured skull, the result of a motor accident which took place late at night. I was unconscious and was taken by ambulance to an infirmary. My husband came with me, and during the drive he saw clearly the everpresence, the only presence, of God, Life. Upon our arrival at the hospital he registered me as a Christian Scientist and asked if I could be given shelter for a short time, to which the hospital authorities willingly agreed. A Christian Science practitioner was asked to help, and when I regained consciousness some thirty-six hours later, so efficacious had been the help that I did not experience a moment's fear at my unusual surroundings and condition. Beyond two X-ray photographs, which confirmed the broken bone across the temple, no medical aid was given, and I was able to read my Bible and the textbook without comment on the part of the hospital staff. Great kindness was shown me, intermixed with surprise. For instance, the matron on her daily round always greeted me with, "You are the young woman who is quite well," to which I could gratefully and scientifically reply, "Yes, Matron, I am."
The following week end my husband was able to take me home, having relieved the hospital authorities of any responsibility, and in just over another week, at the beginning of the January term, I was back at my work as lecturer and headmistress of a woman's secretarial college. Absent treatment only was given me by the practitioner. I can never say how grateful I was for this experience. It showed me the peace and protection we gain from God, Truth, when we stand squarely on Principle. It helped me and still helps me not to be afraid to face what the materialists call facts. For instance, when I felt momentary fear about the results of the X-ray examination, I turned to the textbook for guidance. It opened to pages 462 and 463, and I read: "The Christian Scientist, through understanding mental anatomy, discerns and deals with the real cause of disease. The material physician gropes among phenomena, which fluctuate every instant under influences not embraced in his diagnosis, and so he may stumble and fall in the darkness."
This experience, the day-by-day proofs I continually have, and the steadfastness of practitioners and other Christian Scientists are all teaching me and leading me to some measure of understanding of the truths which our beloved Leader has given us.—(Mrs.) Elizabeth Golding, London, England.
