Before becoming acquainted with...

Before becoming acquainted with Christian Science, we experienced much suffering, many financial worries, physical problems, and sickness in our family. Then one day, through divine direction, I met a Christian Scientist, who spoke to me of this Science. I was happy to accept it all, for I felt that it was the Comforter which I had often asked God to give me.

When I began the daily study of the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, I was healed in a few days of insomnia, bronchopneumonia, and severe stomach trouble. Members of our family have also experienced beautiful healings. One day, while playing, my little niece received a violent blow on the hand which raised a swelling the size of a walnut. It persisted for months. Her father, who did not know Christian Science, sent her to a doctor. He, using a well-known method considered most effective by the medical faculty, cleaned out the swelling. However, it reappeared in a few days. The physician tried two more times to cope with the swelling, but without success. Then we turned to Christian Science for help. One morning, while reading the Lesson to my niece, I read the following passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 257): "Mind creates His own likeness in ideas, and the substance of an idea is very far from being the supposed substance of non-intelligent matter." Then, thought I, there is no matter! When next she looked at her hand, the swelling was gone. It never came back. This occurred over six years ago.

One night this same niece woke with a strong ringing and pain in her ears. While I read the Lesson-Sermon to her, the pain gradually left her, and a deep sense of gratitude for Christian Science, without which she would have been obliged to seek medical aid, took possession of her. What a sense of assurance comes from knowing that the real Physician is ever with us! Both of us were happy and grateful because we felt the presence of God and His Christ. By morning she had forgotten about the whole experience.

On another occasion, during the Second World War, the shelter dug in our garden was filled with water. This worried those who lived in the building, for they did not know where else to go for safety in case of danger. I told them that we ought not to seek protection in the depth of the earth, but should rise to receive protection from God. Finally they decided that we should all crowd into one end of the big room in case of danger during the raids. My niece sent me up to the attic to see if it was free from all heavy objects. There I found a framed motto to hang on the wall. It was from John 8:32: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This was the answer to our problem. I hung it on the wall in the big room, and all fear disappeared.

The next day word was spread that the city would be bombed that evening. In the building with us there lived a woman with two little children. Because she was afraid, she came in to stay with us during the raid. The smaller child, about two years of age, was ill all day, apparently with a high fever. I told the mother that we were not waiting for the devil, but that we were knowing that the divine presence and power, which filled the entire room, was sufficient to heal the child, to cause the real man made in His perfect image and likeness to appear before us. Thereupon the child fell asleep, and I left the room to thank God for the harmony of His universe. In a moment the child sat up, and the feverish redness disappeared from her face. She took a piece of bread from her little brother, ate it with real zest, then looked at us with a happy, calm expression. With tears in her eyes, the mother wanted to know how all this could happen so suddenly. I pointed to the motto on the wall: "The truth shall make you free."

There are many blessings I could recall. During the war the realization that there is no war in God's kingdom was a protection to us.

I am inexpressibly grateful for Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, for my membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, for the Scientist who introduced me to this religion, for the practitioners, and for the Christian Science literature.

And I am grateful for the understanding that God is the only presence and power.—(Miss) Nelly RÁkÓczy, Békéscsaba, Hungary.

I gratefully verify the above testimony of my aunt. When I noticed that the swelling was gone, it seemed miraculous at the time, but today I know that it was divinely natural. During the second experience I came also to understand that discord cannot enter infinite harmony.

I should also like to relate my first demonstration. Once, when I was twelve years of age and was on my way home from school, I noticed four boys mistreating a lamb. A man passed by and spoke to the boys, but they paid no attention. Then it occurred to me to apply what I had been taught in Christian Science, and to know that those boys were God's children and therefore could not express evil. As I approached them, I heard one of the boys say, "Let's turn this poor lamb loose;" and then they ran away. The lamb then came up to me and rubbed against me. I was grateful for this experience, for it taught me that right thinking brings forth right results.—(Miss) Ilona LÁzÁr, Békéscsaba, Hungary.
