I had many times heard of healings...
I had many times heard of healings being effected in Christian Science after doctors and surgeons had failed, but I never thought I should ever be placed in such a situation myself. However, "man's extremity is God's opportunity."
I have been attending the Christian Science church for only a short time. Although I am comparatively young in Science, I feel compelled to write this testimony in gratitude for the complete and beautiful healing which I received through its ministrations.
Early in 1946 I was placed under the care of a doctor who had been my medical adviser for many years. I was suffering from an affliction which was causing me great loss of strength. I was sinking very fast, and a nurse had to be called in to take charge of me. I had lost so much weight that my friends did not recognize me and were startled at my appearance. The doctor told me he could do no more for me, since the difficulty was nothing but nerves, and it was up to me to pull myself together.
My next-door neighbor, a Christian Scientist, heard of my condition and got permission to see me. He asked me if I would like Christian Science treatment, and I very readily consented. After the first treatment, which was given immediately, I gained new hope. My condition became normal and I slept peacefully. I had lost much sleep, and the special sleeping pills given to me by the doctor had had on effect, so the improvement seemed very wonderful to me.
I shall never forget the treatments given to me by the practitioner those first few days, and the peace and calm that came into my life. I learned about God and my relationship to Him and began to realize how cold and barren my former life and religion had been. I felt God's presence permeate my being and was glad once again that I was alive.
In a few days I was up and walking around. In two weeks the nurse was dismissed, and I was doing work about my home each day, having gained much weight. During the above period I lost the desire for tobacco; it seemed to fall from me automatically. This was a great revelation to me, for I had been a heavy cigarette smoker.
I am most grateful for my healing and for all the blessings I have received, for the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, the church services, and the literature; also for the devout practitioner who as a stranger stepped in and lovingly stood beside me during this trying time; but most of all I am grateful for the better understanding I have of my Father-Mother God and His Christ.— (Mrs.) Ray Hasselman, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I wish to corroborate the above testimony of my wife and to express my gratitude to the practitioner for his untiring effort in effecting this healing.—Wesley B. Hasselman.
