Many are the things which I...
Many are the things which I have to be grateful for, and they are the result of a small but growing understanding of Christian Science.
Since the days of my early teens this Science has been the only answer to all my problems, mental and physical. This wonderful, all-powerful truth has brought me through many difficult times, always lifting me above the claims of mortal mind and ever beckoning me onward and upward to greater freedom form the bonds of material sense.
Although I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School for several years, I was not what might be termed an earnest student of this Science until a crisis in my life brought me closer to God and showed me that regardless of evidence to the contrary, "no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires." This statement is from a sentence by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, on page 1 of Science and Health, which reads, "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." This thought was a great comfort and helped me tremendously in readjusting my sense of values and my aims after this personal catastrophe seemed to have robbed me of all that I had held most dear and requisite for my happiness. As the truth of this statement was realized, I was able to rise above the loss of home, human love, and security. As I studied and pondered the latter part of the sentence about our desires being "moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds," real happiness was attained, and a better understanding of what is worth while took the place of more material thinking.
Through the years Christian Science has helped me to face the belief of loss from the passing on of loved ones. When my mother passed on, I was truly sustained and entirely free of any feeling of grief or separation, although she and I had been very close to each other. A clearer concept of Life eternal, uninterrupted and immaterial, was gained, and I could realize the comforting truth of the words in that wonderful hymn (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 135):
I know no life divided,
O Lord of life, from Thee.
Problems of place, employment, home, have always been solved through Christian Science study and prayer. I am deeply grateful for the impersonal and ever-available guidance which our Leader has provided for us in our textbook, Science and Health. This book contains the solution of every problem and points us away from dependence on persons to omnipresent Truth. Class instruction brought great unfoldment, and I could say of that experience what Mrs. Eddy has said on page 264 of Science and Health: "As mortals gain more correct views of God and man, multitudinous objects of creation, which before were invisible, will become visible." I am especially grateful for the understanding of Christian Science as the Comforter of which Christ Jesus spoke and for our inspired Leader, who brought the truth to this age.
Daily I am more aware of the blessings which come to me because of my study and practice of Christian Science, bringing an ever clearer realization of God as perfect Principle and of man as His unfearing, unlimited, undeceived likeness.—(Miss) Ellen Morehouse, Boston, Massachusetts.
I have seen many infallible proofs of the efficacy of Christian Science in the healing of physical disorders and in mental regeneration. The practice of Christian Science includes a realization of man's inherent perfection, and through such realization the presence of the healing Christ becomes apparent.
Some years ago I suffered from intense pain due to a strained muscular condition. For several weeks I had been confined to bed, until one day the telephone rang, and someone in distress asked me if I would help by giving a Christian Science treatment. For a moment it did not seem the right thing for me to do, since I had not been able to handle my own case with any degree of success. Something higher than mortal opinion, however, compelled me to obey the call, and I took up work immediately. While I was realizing the truth about God and man in connection with this particular case, the healing Christ illuminated my consciousness to such an extent that I could see the unreality of the physical condition under which I labored. All sense of pain left me, so that I was able to get up and walk. Later that day I went out for a walk, and the following day I returned to work, completely free.
I am grateful that the understanding of Christian Science enables us to bring the healing and regenerating Christ into our consciousness and experience. I am indeed grateful to God for all that He has given us in the teachings of Christian Science.—William Kouwenhoven, Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.
