Previews of Truth

When a visitor was shown the Special Cloth Edition of the Bible, she remarked with delight: "That's the one I want. It matches my Science and Health." She said her copy of the textbook had been given her when she was very ill. She did not know where it had been purchased. Through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy she had been healed. The previous evening she had attended her first Christian Science church service and had learned about our Reading Room. She was now purchasing the first Bible she had ever owned. She also bought a copy of the Quarterly.

A man who came into our Reading Room to purchase a copy of Science and Health said that for some time he had read and studied the passages from the Bible and the textbook which are displayed in our window and changed daily. He stated that his parents had been interested in Christian Science, but that he had never been able to understand what he had heard of its teachings and had never studied it. Since he had been studying the passages in the opened books in our window, he said he realized that he was understanding and accepting everything he was reading, and he knew he wanted to study Christian Science.

Later he visited his father and found him studying a copy of the textbook which he had purchased some years before. The father was delighted with the more recent edition and wanted it for his own. When our "window reader" returned to buy another copy of Science and Health to take its place, he also purchased a gift copy for a niece and a copy of the Christian Science Quarterly for himself. He was shown how to study the weekly Lesson-Sermons and has, through the study of them, become deeply interested in Christian Science.

Our Reading Room is located in a business district. One day a woman asked to borrow a copy of Science and Health from our lending library. She said that she had once owned a copy of the book but that she had never studied the Lesson-Sermons and she had finally given it away.

Two weeks later she returned to renew the book and to buy a copy of the Quarterly. She appeared greatly distressed and asked the librarian to show her how to study. A copy of Science and Health on the desk was opened to page 207, where she read: "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause." She grasped the book and said, "Oh, here's what I need right now." She went into the study room without telling the librarian the nature of her problem.

As she claimed that divine Love does know and supply rightly every need of man, the librarian recalled the words from the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 139), "Our Father answers every call." In about fifteen minutes the woman came back into the salesroom, her face composed and her expression joyous.

The following day she returned to acknowledge the healing she had sought in the study room the previous day. She was deeply grateful for the Reading Room and for the privilege of studying there.

The second day one of the visitor's fellow employees came in, deeply impressed by the experience. She purchased a Science and Health and a Quarterly and read in the study room.

Since then two Bibles, two more textbooks, three Quarterlies, and other authorized literature have been sold as a direct result of the first healing. One of the purchasers already owned a copy of the textbook, another already owned a Bible. All three are now regular, prayerful, and joyous students of the Lesson-Sermons. Evidence has accrued to point to the healing as permanent, and this has led to the occasional reading of the textbook and the Lesson-Sermons by two more fellow employees.

A young man came into the Reading Room to purchase "some of the magazines that have healings in them." He said that his wife was very ill with a heart condition, and that her doctors had said they had done all medical science could do for her. A friend had told him about Christian Science, and he wanted to know about healings. He was told he could borrow Science and Health, but he seemed to want the periodicals. He purchased the current issues of The Christian Science Journal and the Sentinel.

The next day he came back and asked to borrow the textbook. He said that he and his wife had read nearly every word in the two periodicals. His wife had then slept eleven hours without being elevated in bed, something she had been unable to do for weeks, and had eaten her meals.

When he returned the borrowed copy of Science and Health, he purchased a copy, also a Quarterly and the latest issues of the other periodicals. He expressed further gratitude for Christian Science.
