TODAY

Are you welcoming this day? Are you anticipating good, enjoying good, and claiming good today? This day is God's day, embracing all creation in the gladness of being. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 584), Mary Baker Eddy defines day in part as, "The irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love." Thus today is safe in God's keeping, radiant with Life, resplendent in Truth, glorified by Love. In Life's irradiance is no shadow of death, no darkness of doubt, no night of apprehension. Neither regret, uncertainty, nor fear mars Life's clear shining. In the irradiancy of Life everything responds to Life, expresses Life, shows forth the glory of Life, rejoices in Life. The Psalmist sang (Ps. 118: 24), "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."

Material sense misinterprets day. With its finite outlook on all things it would divide day into a series of days and then measure the fragments by the hands of a clock and the calculations of a calendar. Thus material sense accumulates many days, some good, some bad, until at length the frail mortal of its own conceiving succumbs to the weight of the fictitious burden. The man of God's creating is not a mortal, nor does he exist in a supposititious realm of time. Nothing concerning man is transitory, fragmentary, or divisible. As the idea of God, the beloved of Love, man dwells secure in the light of present eternity.

The prophet Zechariah caught something of the true significance of day, for describing the glory of Truth's appearing he wrote (Zech. 14:6, 7), "It shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: but it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light."' This corroborates Mrs. Eddy's interpretation of day, which continues (Science and Health, p. 584): "'And the evening and the morning were the first day.' (Genesis i. 5.) The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded. This unfolding is God's day, and 'there shall be no night there.'"

The actual today is God's day— not one of a series, but one endless revelation and unfoldment of Life, Truth, and Love, embracing all individuality and identity in fullness of life, health, holiness, and harmony. Today is not a milestone along a path that leads to ultimate death. It is not a link in a chain of days. It is one continuous illumination of Truth which knows neither dawn nor decline, an inextinguishable unfoldment of spiritual timelessness. No human events are taking place in it, none are commemorated by it. It is marred by no occurrence of evil, limited by no finite conception of good. It enfolds no birth, no death, no development from immaturity to maturity, no decline. This day is not torn by human emotions, stained by sensuality, stereotyped by materialistic learning, shackled by fear, or strained by pressure. It registers no record of birth, no diagnosis of disease, no experience of accident, no occurrence of death. It conceals no crime, fosters no suspicion, and enacts no sin. No din of misunderstanding or clash of personal sense mars the music of Soul's day; no shaft of hatred pierces Love's enfoldment.

In vibrant clarity Soul etches the glories of Spirit, even while mortal mind studs its day with poignant memories. Says the textbook (p. 306). "The myriad forms of mortal thought, made manifest as matter, are not more distinct nor real to the material senses than are the Soul-created forms to spiritual sense, which cognizes Life as permanent."

Spiritual sense alone comprehends the day of Spirit. Spiritual sense alone tells us the truth, about today. Let us not then consult human memory or material records. Today Life is recording its harmony, Mind is revealing its infinite possibilities. Love is showing forth its grandeur, good is demonstrating its supremacy. How may this day of Truth, be practically ours today? Science and Health furnishes the answer (p. 261): "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." The first awakened desire to know the truth and to obey the demand of Principle is the dawn of day in human consciousness. Vigilance, obedience, loyalty win its meridian. Referring to the ever-present comfort of the Christ, Truth, Paul said (II Cor. 6: 2), "Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation."

Today exists in the realm of Spirit. The allness of God is its law, the purity of Soul is its atmosphere. Today records the eternality of Life; it demonstrates the omnipotence of Love; it shows forth God's praise. This is your day today.
