The Ever-present Christ
[From the Field]
A man came into the Reading Room after seeing the sign outside and asked if he might read about Christian Science. He went into the study room, and after reading several articles he came to the librarian's desk to ask if Christian Science could help his brother, who was ill with a severe nervous breakdown. Could it help his family, which was in trouble? Could it help him, as he was weighed down with trouble? He was a barrister, being retained by the government, but his family was in another country.
The librarian told him that if he would study the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, he would find the light that would guide him to an answer. Day after day he came to the Reading Room to study the textbook for two or three hours at a time. At first he found it revolutionary to all the physical science he had studied, and sometimes a wall of obstruction would seem to rise up in his thought; but all the time he knew that Science and Health was giving him the truth.
After a period of ten days he came to the librarian to tell her that while he was reading one day he suddenly felt new strength. He said: "All the weakness and weariness I have had during the past few months has gone. It is just wonderful! The peace of this room is past all understanding."
A man with a little boy entered the Reading Room to ask about his subscription to our periodicals. As he was about to leave, the librarian spoke to the little boy. Then the man said that he was taking care of him while the mother was in a hospital. He added that the child had been home from school for the past six months at the request of the doctors, who said that he had a contagious disease and should be examined regularly.
The librarian lovingly said to the little fellow, "Why, as God's reflection you haven't any such disease, because God doesn't have it, and He would have to have it first, wouldn't He?"
The man returned a week later to tell the librarian that the little boy kept repeating this statement all the way home and that in the evening during his playtime he kept saying it to himself. The following day the man took the child to the doctor's for the regular examination. Several X-ray lights were used. but the doctor could not find a trace of the disease. He was very much astonished, but said the child could return to school the next day.
As a result of the advertisements for Science and Health and our local Reading Room, we have had some very inspiring experiences, some of which follow: Our lending library has been unusually active. One month nine copies of the textbook were loaned to newcomers to Christian Science and five of them later purchased copies.
One young woman borrowed the textbook for her father-in-law. He was suddenly called out of town and left the book behind. His wife started to read it and after doing so for some time discovered it to be a lending library copy. She immediately telephoned the Reading Room and asked the librarian how she could own such a book, saying she had never read anything so wonderful before. The same day she sent someone to return the borrowed copy and to purchase one for her.
Two women called at the Reading Room one morning to ask how they could learn something about Christian Science. Science and Health was recommended to them. Later that day they came again, and each borrowed a copy. About six weeks later, on returning the books, which had been renewed, each bought a copy.
A woman came into our Reading Room one day who seemed quite distressed because she was suffering and was afraid of the name of the disease. The Christian Science practitioner who usually helped her was out of town, and the woman did not seem to know what to do.
The librarian assured her that Christ, Truth, is ever present and universal and not dependent upon persons, and that God, good, is no respecter of persons; that God answers all earnest prayer; also that there was someone who could and would be glad to help her. The visitor bought a copy of The Christian Science Journal from which to select another practitioner.
She and the librarian talked for a little while of the allness and perfection and every whereness of God, and of man in His image and likeness, and each gave proofs of healing she had experienced. Then the woman bought a new copy of Science and Health and a Christian Science Quarterly. When she left she said, " The pain is all gone now." A few days later she told the librarian she had experienced a perfect healing and was very grateful for the Reading Room.
