Several years ago I heard a Christian Science lecturer make a statement to this effect: There is no one in the whole world who is opposed to Christian Science, but there are many people who are opposed to what they think it is. If it were what they think it is, we should be opposed to it too; but we are grateful that it is something quite different. Since I live in a small town where there are few Christian Scientists, this thought has been most helpful to me, for it has enabled me to have more love for all with whom I am associated.
Christian Science is defined by Mrs. Eddy in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1): "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." It has been to me a most satisfactory religion, a satisfying way to think and live, and the effective means of healing as demonstrated by Christ Jesus.
In speaking of Christian Science in "Miscellaneous Writings," our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says (p. 336), "Part and parcel of Truth and Love, wherever one ray of its effulgence looks in upon the heart, behold a better man, woman, or child." This statement certainly applies to me, both physically and morally. Having been reared in the Christian Science Sunday School and church, I have been wonderfully blessed by experiencing its healing power many times. By daily study of the Bible and the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I know that I am protected. Whenever I have sincerely applied Christian Science and have endeavored to put the material situation completely out of thought and sought not to heal matter or improve it, but rather to understand God and man's perfection as God's reflection, I have found complete freedom from physical disability.
Several years ago I was healed of a muscular soreness in the hips, which may have been rheumatism, for movement of any kind produced great pain. A practitioner gave me treatments. During this time I read Science and Health completely through. The statement on page 571, "Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil," lifted my thought so completely that I stopped striving for greater knowledge and wondering when the healing would be manifested. Instead, I endeavored to know myself first, by casting out of thought all beliefs unlike God. Then I began to identify myself as in reality idea, completely spiritual. After meditating on the synonyms of God (ibid., p. 465), I tried to see the real man as the reflection of His qualities. As a result, after about three weeks the pain and soreness disappeared, and I was joyous and able to walk upright and free. This healing has been permanent.
I am most grateful for the overcoming of grief when a loved one passed on. I am learning that it is qualities that we love and not person, and that these are never lost. With the help of a practitioner the healing of periodic pain was accomplished after I had accepted the fact that God controls every action and function in complete harmony. But it was first necessary for me to abandon as unreal and as no part of my being many aggressive mental suggestions.
For every activity of the Christian Science movement, the practitioners, the literature, and the lecturers, and especially for our dear Leader's perseverance, spirituality, and great love for mankind, which enabled her to give us this religion that heals discord of every nature, I am sincerely grateful.—(Mrs.) Etoile M. Jacobsen, Hereford, Texas.
