In 1927, after seventeen years of...
In 1927, after seventeen years of almost constant treatment by throat specialists for a serious throat trouble, I accepted an invitation, rather reluctantly, to attend a Christian Science testimony meeting. I had been active in the drug business for thirteen years and had had the best medical attention, until the last physician and friend diagnosed my condition as tubercular. I then consented to attend the Wednesday evening meeting because I knew what little chance I had for recovery according to the medical world. I wanted to live to raise our two daughters; and after the doctor told my husband I had to retire from the store, I became very much depressed. However, after attending the meeting, I was so impressed with the sincerity and love reflected there that I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy that night. I read this book day and night. After three weeks of reading, I knew I was healed. I talked clearly, and my voice was stronger than it had been for seventeen years; after six weeks I joined in singing hymns at services. The healing has been permanent. This was a proof that God's healing power is demonstrated when a scientific understanding of His law of good is gained through studying the teachings of Christian Science.
Following this, a member of my family was healed of cancer of the bladder, another of a rupture of forty years' standing. A nephew who lived with us was healed in three months of what had been termed hereditary diabetes. This experience stands out among all others as a test of our reliance on Truth. The visible effect was most trying, for he appeared to be practically wasting away. When the healing was realized, recuperation was almost instantaneous. His strength and physical appearance improved very quickly. These three healings were accomplished with the help of practitioners.
While I am grateful for physical healings experienced and witnessed, the greatest blessing of all was the understanding in some degree of man as God's child, the demonstrator of good. A knowledge of this was the steppingstone to higher desires and a more consecrated life, enabling me to help my fellow man.
I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and for the blessed privilege of class instruction. Mrs. Eddy was truly God's messenger to this age, and through divine wisdom she has provided many avenues for spiritual growth. May her inspired words from "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 312), "Oh, may the love that is talked, be felt! and so lived, that when weighed in the scale of God we be not found wanting," live in the hearts of all her followers, strengthening them to hold fast that which they have, "that no man take their crown" (Rev. 3:11). —(Mrs.) Edna A. McDuff, New Orleans, Louisiana.
