The teachings of Christian Science...

The teachings of Christian Science have so improved my life that no amount of gratitude that can be expressed seems adequate.

For years friends had tried to interest me in Christian Science. But it was not until a little over four years ago, when I was completely discouraged, sick in body and mind, pessimistic regarding all things, and without any hope for the future, that I attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. My interest grew, and since then I have had many healings, among them those of catarrh, sinus trouble, smoking, drinking, nervousness, constipation, sick headaches, indigestion, asthma, and hay fever. All of these healings have been permanent.

My family too has had several wonderful and permanent healings. Also protection and guidance have been experienced in many things, and a home was provided at a time when the housing shortage was at its most critical point in my locality.

The healing of asthma and hay fever was a great revelation and demonstration of the simple truth revealed by Christian Science. It came about in this way. For sixteen years I had been suffering from hay fever, which early developed into asthma of such a serious nature that in the late summer and fall I was able to sleep very little and that only by sitting up in a chair. To enable me to stay at my work it had been necessary to have injections for six months of the year, at the rate of two or three a week, although these gave me only partial and temporary relief.

After becoming interested in Christian Science I decided to rely on it instead of taking these treatments. When the hay fever season came, I was able to meet the situation to some extent, but whenever progress was made, it seemed that a relapse followed. After several attempts to handle this, I began to suffer so severely one week end that it was necessary for me to leave my home in the country and go into seclusion in the city apartment of a friend, where the condition was seemingly less acute.

With the words of Mrs. Eddy in her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 (p. 2), "The song of Christian Science is, 'Work— work—work—watch and pray,' " running through my mind, I took the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, turned to the chapter entitled "Footsteps of Truth," and started to read thoughtfully and prayerfully. About midnight I tried to retire, but my condition was such that I could not do so. Again I turned to the study of the same chapter and referred occasionally to the chapter on Prayer, trying to understand what I read. I continued to study and pray until about three o'clock in the morning, when the trouble left me completely.

About four o'clock in the morning I retired, and later arose at the usual time refreshed and vigorous as a result of my experience. That day I accomplished more work than usual without any fatigue and in a better sense of health than I had ever known before. This in itself was to me a demonstration of the truths revealed by Christian Science.

Practitioners have been of great help to me, and I never cease marveling over and being grateful for the provision made by Mrs. Eddy for them, as well as for all the church activities. My gratitude for the Bible and its spiritual interpretation given us by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health grows constantly. I thank God for bringing Christian Science to the world.—Warren Clark Devitt, Lakewood, Ohio.
