I am so grateful for Christian Science...
I am so grateful for Christian Science and for what it has done for me that I cannot any longer put off expressing my gratitude.
I should like to tell of an experience that I had several years ago. I fell one evening and fractured my shoulder. At the time I did not think anything very serious had occurred, but the next morning I could not rise from my bed. My family, who were not Christian Scientists, thought a physician should be railed to see if any bones were broken, so I consented.
Mrs. Eddy says on page 401 of Science and Health, "Until the advancing age admits the efficacy and supremacy of Mind, it is better for Christian Scientists to leave surgery and the adjustment of broken bones and dislocations to the fingers of a surgeon, while the mental healer confines himself chiefly to mental reconstruction and to the prevention of inflammation." The X ray taken at the hospital showed a very bad. fracture, and the doctor said that it would be necessary to call in a surgeon to set the bone. It seemed wisdom to me, after reading Mrs. Eddy's statement, to be obedient, so the surgeon was called. However, he was unable to set the bone. He said that the break was in such a position that the bone would not hold and that I would have to have an operation and have the bone pinned together.
Mrs. Eddy adds to her statement quoted above, on page 402 of the textbook, "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing which will be last acknowledged." So I knew that this was my opportunity to prove that Christian Science could set bones as well as heal other things. I had been having help from a Christian Science practitioner, and I did not consent to the operation. After I left the hospital, I felt the bone come together and knew that the operation had been performed in Science and would be successful. I had the help of a loving Christian Science nurse for a few days. In a week's time I took an automobile trip of a hundred miles with no discomfort at all. While I was away, one night an inner voice kept saying to me, "Stretch forth your arm." I felt impelled to remove the sling that had been supporting it and from then on had no support on it at all. I knew that God was my support and that that was all that was necessary.
I had been told that I would be a cripple for the rest of my life and that I would never play the piano again. But in six weeks I played the accompaniment for the solo at church, in eight weeks I went swimming, and soon I was driving my car again. I am grateful to say that the healing was complete, and I have continued to use the arm normally ever since.
For the care, guidance, and protection that I have had through many difficult adjustments which have had to be made in my life and for the overcoming of impatience and impulsiveness to a great extent, I am grateful. My testimony would not be complete without expressing gratitude for class instruction, also for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for opportunities to serve in church work in main ways. I am grateful for Mrs. Eddy, who has unlocked the Scriptures for me and given me a better understanding of the Bible through the study of the Christian Science textbook. I have really learned how to trust our Father-Mother God through this study.—(Mrs.) Isabelle C. Graham, Ashtabula, Ohio.
