[Original testimony in German]

"To those leaning on the sustaining...

"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I have been very conscious of these words of our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Pref., p. vii) during the past few years, and they have given me a clear sense of man's unity with omnipotent, ever-present God, Principle, universal Love. This oneness with Love protected me in "time of trouble," in accordance with the Scriptural promise (Ps. 27:5), "He shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me."

In 1941, when Christian Science was prohibited and its practice was subject to severe punishment, I was arrested for my adherence to it. During my imprisonment, however, I continued unswervingly to know that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (II Cor. 3:17), and that, as Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 480), "Where the spirit of God is, and there is no place where God is not, evil becomes nothing,—the opposite of the something of Spirit." I prayed (Ps. 119:156), "Great are thy tender mercies, O Lord: quicken me according to thy judgments." My heart was one with God. I had served Him, had broken His bread with the sick and poor— declared the truth—hence had done nothing to injure my country. Thus I knew that the lie of mortal sense could not harm me. God was proved to be compassionate Love.

When I was released, I was forced to take a position in a laboratory, but unfathomable divine Mind sustained me. Love was with me wherever I went. In the often impenetrable darkness before dawn, when I was making my way to the factory, it was as if a glow of light surrounded me, and I often glanced around to see if the light came from some defective black-out. But it did not, so it must be true that where Love is, there is light.

When my health gave way somewhat, because of weariness or privation, I thanked God for all His goodness and "for his wonderful works to the children of men" (Ps. 107:8). Man's oneness with God, good, was maintained in thought, and the facts of Christian Science were declared and proved. Although I was subject to all manner of privations due to the cruelty of war and its attendant circumstances, divine Love always met my need. Despite the fact that my Christian Science literature was confiscated and destroyed, now and again I had recourse to a copy of the Sentinel which I had hidden away. God continued to give me new ideas, and they gave me all I needed. Besides the work I was doing in the laboratory, I was also able to do healing work in Christian Science.

God has abundantly blessed me through this Science and protected me. I can do no less than continue to express fidelity and gratitude.— Johannes Meding, Rheinfelden, Baden, Germany.
