"He to whom 'the arm of the...

"He to whom 'the arm of the Lord' is revealed will believe our report, and rise into newness of life with regeneration." Thus writes our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 24). I am more grateful than words can express for the teaching of Christian Science, which has indeed given me newness of life and regeneration. My acceptance of this teaching brought immediate relief from worry, unrest, and dissatisfaction and resulted in happy employment and the overcoming of debt. Warts were healed when I took the forward step of studying the complete Lesson-Sermon each day from the Christian Science Quarterly

I had been a heavy smoker for some years, and had tried several times without success to overcome the habit. Shortly after taking up the study of Science. I saw that smoking was inconsistent with this teaching; but I still found it most difficult to overcome. A practitioner kindly pointed out to me the words of Christ Jesus (Matt. 15:13), "Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up," and explained that this habit was like a weed which had to be rooted out of my thinking. Although it took some time, the healing was complete, and I gained much through my study during that period. At the same time all desire for intoxicants left me. I am deeply grateful for the freedom from these false appetites, for which I have had no desire since that time—over twenty years ago.

During my early experience in Science I did not see how I could heal myself of any physical disorders, but many difficulties, including bronchitis, were overcome through study and the kindly help of a student or a practitioner. I had suffered very much from bronchitis, and one day I was coughing a good deal when a practitioner said to me, "You must get rid of that." Shortly afterwards I realized that this condition had completely disappeared. Later on I had a physical disorder whilst away in the country, and I was forced to work for myself, as I was alone. I denied the reality of the discord, and affirmed the allness of God, good. Great was my joy when the healing came, and I realized that I had gained a positive, demonstrable understanding of the Christ Science.

One evening I found my father extremely ill and in great pain, and I asked him if I could help him in Christian Science. He said, "Yes, anything." I endeavored to realize the perfect man of God's creating, and about nine o'clock he seemed peacefully asleep. The next morning my mother told me that during the night my father had become very cold, and she had tried without success to warm him, and was very much worried. Towards morning a passage from the Bible (I Pet. 5:6, 7) had come very clearly to her thought: "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." Turning to my father she said, "Yes, He careth for me and He careth for you." The burden had lifted from her, and she was soon asleep. In the morning my father was well on the way to recovery.

On riding a bicycle down a very steep hill, I came to a sharp bend in the road and was thrown heavily to the ground. I was traveling at great speed and was severely shaken. I lay on the ground declaring the truth until a man came along to help. I was able to rise and walk to his home near by, and have my hands and face bathed. Although bruised and stiff, I was able to continue my journey and attend a church lecture meeting. On returning to my work in a country town, I was concerned over my appearance, as my face was badly marked. I worked to know the unreality of the condition, realizing that there was only one consciousness the consciousness of good, and therefore, no one could be conscious of evil. Although working in a small office and living at a hotel, I had no embarrassing questions to answer at either place, and I was soon completely recovered. I was able to shave without any trouble during this period, which seemed wonderful to me.

When the war broke out in 1939, I devoted a great deal of thought to where my duty lay, and studied the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings for guidance. I was led to enlist in the Army, and as soon as I decided to do so, I felt a wonderful sense of peace, and my arrangements to enter the forces were very harmonious For the help of Christian Science in sustaining me through many difficult problems during more than five years of service I can never adequately express my gratitude. I am grateful to say that I was able to study the Lesson-Sermon every day, and realized many healings both for myself and for others during my Army career.

I am deeply grateful to our Father-Mother God and to Mrs. Eddy for her discovery of Christian Science and her unselfed love for humanity in establishing the Christian Science movement. I am deeply grateful for our remarkable daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor. I have experienced many healings from reading the Monitor. which is indeed blessing all mankind with its healing, uplifting influence. I am grateful for the Sentinel, which awakens us to deal with the problems of the day, and for the inspiring articles in The Christian Science Journal.

For all the activities of The Mother Church and the branch churches, for the priceless experience of class instruction from a consecrated teacher, and for the privilege of service in the Cause of Christian Science, I am most grateful —(Lt) John H. Clissold, Melbourne, Australia.
