Many years ago the textbook,...
Many years ago the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was given to me. Although I read only one paragraph of it then, that paragraph was so full of promise that when the summer came I determined to spend my time reading this wonderful book.
Two friends and I went to a beautiful spot in the White Mountains, hungry to read this book which states (p.118): "Ages pass, but this leaven of Truth is ever at work. It must destroy the entire mass of error, and so be eternally glorified in man's spiritual freedom."
Each morning we took Science and Health with us and read until lunch time, sitting beside a rustic bridge over a lovely waterfall. Each day the leaven of Truth was at work. One member of the group discarded glasses which she had worn for sixteen years.
I had gone away that summer weak and unhealthy, but I came home well and happy. It was a profitable summer, for the three of us had accepted Christian Science and we joined the church in a very short time.
One night I was awakened by a severe pain back of one ear. My friend who was sleeping in the room turned on the light and read to me from Science and Health. As the words came to me, I could feel the pain lessening until I fell asleep. This occurred several times that night. In about ten days I was entirely free from the trouble. The condition I found later was mastoiditis. No practitioner was called, but the textbook was faithfully read and its truths were applied. I did not miss one hour from my work of teaching in a public school, or from any of the other duties, such as reading the textbook every afternoon to my brother-in-law and teaching in a Christian Science Sunday School. I am very grateful for this healing and to the faithful friend who was ready to read to me when I was not able to do my own reading.
Some time later I met a friend who told me she had suffered for six weeks from mastoiditis and had spent some time in the hospital. Never once was I tempted to take any material remedies, because I was learning to prove that as a man "thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7). Our Leader tells us in Science and Health (p. 425): "Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew. You will never fear again except to offend God, and you will never believe that heart or any portion of the body can destroy you." Each word of Truth that came to me was a blow to error until finally the error was destroyed.
I am certainly grateful for our unselfed Leader, who devoted her life to this great Cause in order that we may find the way to the dominion over the flesh which was promised by Christ Jesus. My sincere hope is that someone reading this testimony may turn to Science and Health and find the comfort and healing I have found through the years. Though the way from sense to Soul has at times been rugged, each victory has left me happier and more harmonious.—(Miss) Maude E. Connelly, Brooklyn, New York.
