This testimony is written in gratitude to God for all the blessings Christian Science has brought to me.
When Science first came into my life I was about seventy years of age and in a desperate condition. I had been confined to my bed for about five weeks with a third attack of phlebitis, and I was told to expect more attacks. This one left me with nervous prostration so severe that I could not write, nor even hold and read a paper. I also had varicose veins in my left leg extending above the knee, so that I was unable to walk more than about a block and a half. My doctor held out no hopes of a cure for this ailment.
During the previous two years my wife and my oldest son had passed on. I had also lost my entire financial resources and was without any source of income. Feeling that my days of activity were over, I was without hope.
Then an old friend told me that his mother, when about sixty-two years old, had diabetes, and that her doctors stated she had only a few weeks longer to live. She was completely healed by Christian Science, however, and enjoyed a healthy, active life for many years. My friend persuaded me to consult a Christian Science practitioner. I did so, and after a few treatments a complete change in my physical condition took place. One day to my surprise I found that the varicose veins had disappeared; a little later I was healed of the nervous prostration, and there has been no return of these ailments. The attacks of phlebitis also stopped. I was completely healed.
Seven years of good health, strength, activity, and improved financial condition ensued. My miraculous cure aroused in me the desire to know how such things could take place. I spent many hours in Christian Science Reading Rooms studying and reading the periodicals and testimonies. I attended the Sunday services, the Wednesday meetings, and numerous lectures. During this time I had other healings, although I used no drugs and consulted no doctors. I became convinced that nothing is impossible to God when He is rightly approached.
One November an attack of arthritis confined me to my home. This trouble became more acute, and by the end of the year I was suffering greatly and was helpless physically. The practitioner who was helping me showed me that during the previous seven years I had been trying to "get," but I had not made an effort to serve. I had not joined the church, nor had I helped in its work. With his consecrated assistance, I experienced a change in thought which brought immediate improvement. Within about sixty days I was at work again, fully recovered, and there has been no return of this trouble.
I am now a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church, in the activities of which I have enjoyed participating. I feel, look, and act at least ten years younger than I was on that day when Christian Science found me.—Charles S. Johnson, Chicago, Illinois.
