Butte, Montana (First Church).

Dedication services for First Church of Christ, Scientist, Butte, were conducted on Sunday morning. September 30, 1945, at the beautiful modern structure at 229 North Montana.

Records of the local congregation show that the first Christian Science organization in Butte was founded in March, 1893. For many years services were held at the home of one of the original members. In January, 1911, the church organization was incorporated and became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Butte.

As the membership grew, it was necessary on several occasions to move to larger quarters for services. In 1914, the congregation met for the first time in a house, later purchased, on the present church site. Plans to tear down the original building and prepare for the construction of a suitable edifice were launched in 1916.

Ground was broken for the first unit of the present church in October. 1920. While the building was under construction, services were held in the Woman's Club Building on West Park. The cornerstone for the first unit of the church was laid on December 31, 1920.

In 1929. attendance had increased to the extent that members felt the need of a larger auditorium. Plans were inaugurated for the construction of a second unit. Services in the completed auditorium were first held on Thanksgiving Day. 1930.
