Divine Service

A young woman needed assurance to overcome her fear of a physical examination which was required to enable her to take a new position. A short time before, the report from such an examination had been so unfavorable that she was afraid the forthcoming one would also prove unsatisfactory. The attendant in the Reading Room recommended that she study carefully the definition of "man" on page 475 of Science and Health. The young woman did so, and some weeks later returned to express her gratitude, saying that she had gone through the examination with flying colors. She was also grateful for the time she had spent in the Reading Room working on this problem.

One morning a timid man waited patiently at the counter of our Reading Room until several others had been taken care of. Then he asked for the "health book." The night before he had seen an advertisement in the local newspaper of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. He bought a copy of the textbook and went out very happy.

In a few days he was back, and much of his timidity had disappeared. He said he had been greatly helped by his reading, and he wondered if Christian Science could heal his deafness. The librarian assured him that nothing is impossible with God. He then bought another copy of Science and Health for a friend who was bedfast. The librarian invited him to come back the next day to learn how to study the Lesson-Sermon. He came, bought a Bible and a Christian Science Quarterly, and the librarian showed him how to study the Lesson.

Several days later he was back again, but a very different man. This time he was assured and poised. He said, "I can hear the friction of the automobile tires on the pavement, and I haven't heard that in years."

As a result of this one man's introduction to Science through a newspaper advertisement, nine copies of Science and Health were sold to people who, up to that time, knew nothing of Christian Science.

A letter of gratitude from a frequent visitor to our Reading Room follows: "I have found the Reading Room a haven of inspiration in many ways. At one time the thought kept presenting itself to me that a change in my business position was in store for me, and I turned prayerfully to divine Mind to know the answer. I seemed to be stirred by the insistence of the thought, and was restless and dissatisfied. I studied regularly in the Reading Room. The mental upheaval lessened as I grew absorbed in the fundamental truths of Christian Science that I was learning and reviewing on place and right activity. This culminated in a splendid change of position which brought with it greater income, more freedom, and larger opportunities.

"One of the most interesting facts of the demonstration was the way I was led to the librarian's desk at the precise moment when a man who was seeking an administrative assistant for his business was voicing his need to one of the librarians. The timing of this event has been a revelation and an inspiration to me. My growth in this office has continued, and I am very grateful for the Reading Room where I could study quietly and undisturbed."

An industrial worker, a student of Christian Science, who came to the Reading Room regularly to study, remarked on one occasion that because of inharmonious surroundings she was unhappy and discouraged about her work. It was recommended that she take the Concordances to Mrs. Eddy's works and do research study on the words "place" and "activity."

She did so, and several days later she came in with a radiant countenance to tell the librarian that she had been transferred to another department, where a more harmonious atmosphere prevailed. She especially expressed gratitude for the recommendation of the librarian that she work with the Concordances in solving this problem.

A young Frenchman recently agreed with the librarian that his purchase of Science and Health was the best investment he ever made. He carries the textbook in his pocket. Since he has been reading he has been healed of chronic alcoholism and of lying. He expressed much gratitude for Christian Science Reading Rooms.

A student of Christian Science came into the Reading Room and said that she had had influenza for several days and had not been able to get relief. She seemed rather bewildered and, on looking over the periodicals and bound volumes, she remarked, "I don't know where to begin." The librarian said very quietly and with assurance, "God does." The student thanked her and started reading. In about two hours she came out through the sales room and remarked gratefully to the librarian that she felt as though she had been lifted from a deep, dark pit. She was entirely free and well.
