The encouraging, strengthening...
The encouraging, strengthening influence of a testimony of healing in Christian Science prompts me to relate an experience which I had about two years ago.
I was visiting in a distant city when I sustained a fall in which my right shoulder joint was broken. I had never had a broken bone before, but I felt sure this was a break because of the sensation I had whenever I attempted to move my arm. There was never a moment of doubt in my consciousness as to God's ability to bring about the healing, and to this fearless confidence in God, I attribute the results which followed.
I asked for Christian Science treatment, and in less than two weeks I was able to make the journey home to New Orleans, a distance of twelve hundred miles, with very little discomfort and no ill effects. Some weeks later, for the sake of those near me who were somewhat doubtful, I had an X ray taken. The nationally known surgeon and bone specialist under whose supervision the picture was taken, and who explained it to me, pointed out the perfectly set, knitted, and healed joint, and declared that in his opinion the bone must have been broken years before, so completely had the restoration taken place. As Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 402), "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing which will be last acknowledged."
Christian Science has sustained and protected me while traveling both on land and on sea, and I gratefully acknowledge the blessings it continually affords.
At one time, in making the ascent from sea level to an elevation of eleven thousand feet, I suffered from difficult breathing, nausea, and headache. Recalling the powerful statement of truth in our textbook (p. 322), "When understanding changes the standpoints of life and intelligence from a material to a spiritual basis, we shall gain the reality of Life, the control of Soul over sense, and we shall perceive Christianity, or Truth, in its divine Principle," I came into a clear realization that man's spiritual being, his only true being, is forever one with God, good, and cannot be affected by altitude, pressure, temperature, air, or other material conditions. Soon I experienced perfect freedom from suffering.
I am also grateful for an immediate healing of seasickness during a storm on the Atlantic, when I recognized "the control of Soul over sense," and exchanged fear and forebodings for the contemplation of the beauty, grandeur, and vastness of the sea, and remembered that it is God "who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand" and "gathered the wind in his fists." These reflections brought me peace. "Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord," said Paul (Rom. 8:39).
I am deeply grateful for the revelation of Truth given us by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy—the truth that has brought so much joy and peace and comfort to the world.—(Mrs.) Edyth B. Hammett, New Orleans, Louisiana.
