How Did Jesus Heal?

A Student of Christian Science who had applied her spiritual understanding to a problem with no success wondered one day just how Jesus would have met the situation. Turning to the textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." she was attracted by the following significant statement of its author, Mary Baker Eddy (pp. 476. 477): "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick."

Pondering the latter sentence, the student saw that if the correct view of man can heal a sick body, her trouble must lie in an incorrect view of man and not in the so-called physical body. Had she approached her problem with the understanding that her own false viewpoint was the source of the trouble? No, she had believed that the condition was taking place in matter and had hoped to heal it with a spiritually mental treatment.

How could the correct view of man heal this condition which seemed material and objective? Manifestly there could be but one answer. The condition was not material and objective; it was a state of thought, her own erroneous viewpoint, that afflicted her. Therefore as long as she endeavored to change the effect of a wrong viewpoint while continuing to hold to that viewpoint, instead of giving it up for the correct view of man, she would continue to have an unsolved problem. But when she determined to see through spiritual sense, the perfection of man despite what the material senses alleged to be a contrary condition, this correct view of man which she glimpsed healed her.
