We read in Isaiah (59:19)...

We read in Isaiah (59:19), "When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him." The truth of this promise was proved to me in an experience I had early this year.

I wanted to break into two pieces a very hard square of chocolate, and in order to do so I stuck the point of a paring knife into it. I heard something crack, but the chocolate did not break, so I withdrew the knife and put the chocolate into my mouth.

Presently I became aware of a sharp substance on my tongue. Before I could remove it, it slipped down my throat, and I found it painful to swallow. I then noticed that I had broken off the knifetip, which must have remained in the chocolate, and it was obviously this that I had swallowed. During the next hour the pain increased, as did my fear.

I telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner in another town, asking her to give me a treatment for fear. I knew that if I could lift the fear, the rest would follow naturally. I was awake most of that night in great pain, and in the morning found signs of internal bleeding, which increased my fear of direful consequences.

I wired the practitioner to continue treatment, and meanwhile told a Christian Scientist in the house of my fear. She talked to me for a while, protesting strongly against the belief that any material substance could harm real being, which is spiritual, and told me to study the following passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 495): "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not."

All through the day I tried earnestly to follow those commands, and clung to the truth expressed in that paragraph, which indeed lifted up a standard against the enemy of fear. The fear lessened until it finally disappeared. By the end of the day the pain had completely gone, and by the following morning the bleeding had ceased, and I was happy to be able to write to the practitioner informing her that the complete healing had taken place.

I cannot find adequate words to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for her wonderful book, Science and Health, which contains the truth that will heal all human ills.

I am deeply grateful, too, for the patience and faithfulness of the practitioners, and also for the great blessing of class instruction.—(Miss) Constance E. Parker, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.
