Demand and Supply Coincident

God , divine intelligence, does not cause the unbalance between demand and supply which so often appears in human life with resulting discord. This unintelligent condition is the outcome of ignorant, unbalanced thinking—is an objectification of the human mind, the fictitious opposite of divine Mind, God.

If one accepts the axiomatic premise that basic cause is absolute intelligence, Mind, the conclusion follows that everywhere and at all times, in the universe and man this intelligent cause evolves, there is a perfect balance, or equipoise, between demand and supply. The observing prophet glimpsed this verity when he asked (Isa. 40:12), "Who hath ... weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?" And Elihu questioned (Job 37:16), "Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the works of him which is perfect in knowledge?" All the works of the Mind "which is perfect in knowledge" are eternally expressing wisdom-balanced being.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy observes (p. 124): "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind. They belong to divine Principle, and support the equipoise of that thought-force, which launched the earth in its orbit and said to the proud wave, 'Thus far and no farther.'" The balancing of the mountains, the hills, the clouds, and the ordering of the stars and planets all tell us something of the equilibrium of Mind. Should you or I, or the world in general, be confronted with a sense of things very much out of balance, that sense can be displaced individually and collectively by drawing nearer to God, by understanding and realizing Mind's all-inclusiveness and its constancy of control over and provision for each of its ideas. And how great is the world's need to know this!

Tens of millions of mortals on this planet are on the verge of starvation all the time; inadequate supply of food, clothing, shelter, and the comforts of human living. Multitudes who have an adequate supply of material things yearn for happiness, but see no way to find it; others search for health, but fail to secure it; many are eager for success and accomplishment, but seem frustrated by lack of ability or opportunity, and never attain it. Still others feel a demand or need for companionship, for a home, employment, substance, for which there is found no provision or supply.

The hiatus so apparent in human experience between demand and supply is traceable to belief in and fear of the material or mortal mind, divine Mind's negative opposite, the one evil. It claims to make a material universe and people it with mortals, to produce in their thought and life insistent demands which it fails lamentably to supply. The spiritual idea of Life and man is the antidote for this falsity.

The spiritual fact is that infinite Mind causes all the ideas and identities of Life, and causes each to be continuously supplied with all that is essential to its individual perfection and completeness. Only so can the perfection and harmony of the individual and of the universe be maintained.

In Christ Jesus' life demand and supply were coincident. This was so from his infancy. There was no room for Mary in the inn, but a manger met the need. Herod's hate gave rise to the demand for protection, and angel thoughts were supplied of Mind to direct Joseph to take Mary and Jesus into Egypt. When it was time for the Master to choose his disciples, the right ones were at hand without long searching or much interviewing.

When he was confronted with false accusers and detractors, his need for wisdom in speech and act was forthwith supplied by his Father, Mind. The thoughts he needed to heal multitudes, to raise the dead, to feed thousands, to calm the storm, to find the upper room for the Passover, and to accomplish his resurrection were there with the demand. Mind caused supply and demand to coincide. The all-loving Father could not do otherwise.

Let us see the rightness of lives well balanced by Mind. God of course does not supply everything we may humanly wish to have. Our human desires must conform to God's all-wise law for His representative, man. Often our first need is for humility, unselfishness, love. Always our basic need is for an understanding of God, infinite Mind, and of man's uninterruptible unity with this Mind. The spiritual idea of God, creation, and man—the Christ—alone reveals the constancy of Love's law governing man, wherein demand and supply go hand in hand.

Each individuality is equally the object of this all-loving Mind's constant care. To be truly evidenced, God must supply to every individual impartially not what mere human wishing would prescribe, but that which unerring wisdom and all-considerate Love decree. Health, happiness, home, useful activity, harmonious relationships, progress, and accomplishment are all supplied by God for His own.

These appear in each individual's experience in proportion to his obedience to and exemplification of the law of God. He must refuse to believe that he is what mortal mind says he is, refuse to believe that he is a mortal personality confronted with various demands but lacking in adequate supply. He must daily be realizing that he is by God's grace superior to error's claim that there is a demand without a supply. No such status is known to perfect Mind or its reflection, man.

Let us see that Mind causes demand and supply to be coincident in human consciousness. Mortal mind must, as a step toward its annihilation, yield and become subjugated to, and accept the control of, omniscient Mind; it must conform to its will, or law, with a resulting balanced economy and living for one and all.
