"Who told thee?"
The joy, harmony, and real accomplishment of each day depend upon what we accept in our thinking as real. Quick, correct mental decisions bring fruitful hours. In the degree the truths are maintained in thought that God is Love, that He does not create anything unlike Himself, and that it is impossible for anything not of His creating to exist in His infinite goodness, sin, sickness, and lack are eliminated from our experience. These glorious facts are true regardless of the varying degrees in which we understand them.
The perfect universe, including man, remains intact throughout all time. "There was never a moment in which evil was real," declares Mary Baker Eddy in her book "No and Yes" (p. 24). Perfect results, therefore, cannot be obtained by working from the premise that both good and evil are real. Our success is sure as we learn to discriminate between the false evidence of material sense and the true idea of Life and man discerned through spiritual sense, and refuse to entertain thoughts which do not express God.
The writer at one time was experiencing a most trying difficulty. She had applied the truths of Christian Science very faithfully over a period of time, but had been unable to destroy the error and gain her freedom. One day this passage from the Bible was read (Matt. 6:22): "If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." She pondered hour after hour upon this wonderful promise, praying for the understanding of how to apply it to meet her present need. Then it was realized that to keep one's eye single is to recognize no power or presence but God, to obey no law but His law, to cease listening to the voice of aggressive mortal sense suggesting error's presence and power, and to heed the voice of God. Then and there she decided to keep her eye single. As this decision was radically carried out, complete freedom was gained in just a few days.
When error seems to drown the voice of God, divine Truth, it is simply aggressive mental suggestion claiming to be one's own thinking, and we must recognize it for what it is and refuse to believe it is our consciousness. Such alertness clears the way for the Christ to enter our thought and healing to be experienced.
After yielding to the temptation to believe in the reality of evil, Adam and Eve hid themselves because they knew that they were naked. It was then that they heard the voice of the Lord God asking (Gen. 3:11): "Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?" In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says (p. 71): "Evil has no reality. It is neither person, place, nor thing, but is simply a belief, an illusion of material sense." Since there is actually no evil, should its false claim present itself one can quickly ask himself the challenging question, "Who told thee?" Who, indeed, tells us anything of an ungodlike nature but the serpent, material sense? It is not difficult to tell whether good or evil is speaking. Neither is it difficult quickly to take our stand on the side of good and, regardless of the material evidence, to stand our ground.
Jesus always made a quick choice, and he chose the side of good. When a hungry multitude was present and mortal mind argued, "We have here but five loaves, and two fishes" (Matt. 14: 17), he instantly challenged the thought of lack. Disregarding the material evidence, he commanded the people to sit down, and when he had given thanks the food was distributed, and there was ample for all. So it was in every recorded instance throughout his ministry: he challenged error, destroyed its false evidence, and demonstrated the presence and power of good.
What are we listening to during our working hours? God's directing voice may always be heard when the would-be interferences of material sense are silenced. A spiritual idea is always present to heal any belief of sickness, sin, or lack. "Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord" (Jer. 23:24). Since God is good and fills all space, there is none beside Him.
"Who told thee" that there is not enough work; that there are not enough homes? God does not tell us of lack or discord, but only of all-inclusive abundance and harmony. Those returning from the services have been fighting for spiritual freedom. They have been faithful; they have finished their job. It is unthinkable that the understanding of God as Love which has protected and guided them through months of danger and hardships will not provide them with constructive work and comfortable homes.
A student of Christian Science recently had an experience which shows the presence and power of God to meet every need. Her efforts to find a place in which to live had been fruitless. There was just one day left in which to vacate a house which had been sold. Throughout the day she steadfastly maintained the infinite abundance of God. A few hours before the house had to be vacated, a call came offering her not only a place in which to live, but a most desirable one, and it has proved adequate and comfortable in every way.
Let us choose hourly whom we will serve. Let us refuse to believe that in the infinitude of good aught of an evil nature has place or power. God's law alone is operating. There is nothing to oppose it. When we walk closely, trustingly, and obediently with Him, the way will always be made plain before us and we shall have the spiritual light and courage to go forward.
