I have been a student of Christian Science...
I have been a student of Christian Science all my life and have had many glorious glimpses of the omnipotence of God. For these I am most grateful. However, it was not until recently that I realized the necessity of heeding Mrs. Eddy's statement in her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 (p. 2), "The song of Christian Science is, 'Work —work—work —watch and pray.'" In heeding it I have been freed from many beliefs and accusations of mortal mind.
Over a year ago, while in the service, I began to be bothered by a skin irritation. If I had denied the error when it first appeared I should have experienced no further trouble. As it was, I allowed myself to become mesmerized to the point that my body was raw from scratching, and was swollen. The trouble was called New Guinea crud, or jungle rot.
I was finally sent to a hospital in Denver. I got in touch with a practitioner, who made me realize that I was not in the hospital to get treatment or help, but rather to express God and to get a better understanding of the infinite Mind. This immediately freed me from unhappiness because of my surroundings and made me more responsive to the law of God, good. It was here that I learned to "work—work—work—watch and pray," for it was only by constant denial of error that I could realize my at-one-ment with God and be free from the body.
On pages 470 and 471 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy we read: "The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history." An understanding of this truth completely healed me not only of the physical evidence, but also of the belief that medications, baths, and pills had any effect.
I am grateful to know that we are all in truth children of God, subject only to the law of omnipotent Mind. I am also grateful to Mrs. Eddy and to the practitioner who awakened me to this understanding.—William E. Ellwanger, Denver, Colorado.
I wish to verify my son's testimony, and also to express my gratitude to Christian Science for helping me to see and enjoy a new world right where I have been living all the time.
Until I began to study Christian Science I did not realize how my thoughts affected my experiences. We are always thinking about something, and how important it is to choose and guard good thoughts. All the progress in the world has come about through improved reasoning and divine revelation.
The declaration in Mrs. Eddy's wonderful "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health,p. 468) that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all," is becoming clearer to me every day. There are six in our family, and for over twenty years we have demonstrated the omnipresence of good. Physical problems have been quickly solved, and adequate supply has been manifested, even to the extent that two children were able to go through college during so-called depression years.
It is such a blessing to have a Leader like Mrs. Eddy, who has given us the spiritual interpretation of the Bible. I am grateful for the Christian Science literature, which brings extra spiritual food; for the practitioners, for class instruction, and for the opportunity to serve in a branch church.—(Mrs.) Esther B. Ellwanger, Denver, Colorado.
