In his Sermon on the Mount, Christ Jesus...
In his Sermon on the Mount, Christ Jesus counsels us (Matt. 6:33): "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
When I first began reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I had no idea that the reading of this book could bring healing. However, what I read so appealed to me that I read almost every spare minute, and often far into the night.
Weeks and even months later, I began to realize that many difficulties, some dating from early childhood, had ceased to exist. Among these were laryngitis, tonsillitis, neuralgia, malaria, biliousness, fatigue, restlessness, homesickness, and headaches of almost daily occurrence. All of these healings were accomplished without any specific work. During this period also, constipation of over thirty years' standing was healed in one treatment by a practitioner.
Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for these healings. I have only to recall them when other troubles are slow to yield to treatment. But what has meant even more to me than freedom from physical suffering is the spiritual awakening and progress which have accompanied the healings.
I had an instantaneous healing of a dislocated elbow caused by a fall down a steep flight of steps. I was on my feet almost instantly, declaring aloud such truths as came to me. My arm hurt excruciatingly, but I did not look at it until I had gained dominion over fear. What I saw would have been alarming had I not first destroyed my fear. In Science and Health (p. 258) we read, "Never born and never dying, it were impossible for man, under the government of God in eternal Science, to fall from his high estate." While I was looking at my arm, declaring the truth that it was impossible for man to "fall from his high estate," the twisted elbow straightened, the depression between the joints disappeared, and the bones snapped back into place.
As my arm was badly swollen and bruised, the other members of the household insisted upon an X ray. To allay their fears, and knowing what the examination would reveal, I consented. The X ray showed that there had been a dislocation, but that the bones were in normal position. During this experience I did not lose a day from work.
A condition of almost total deafness in one ear developed suddenly and caused me much fear and inconvenience. The healing, brought about with the help of a practitioner, was a slow one, requiring much searching and purifying of thought. The definition of "ears" in the Glossary of Science and Health (p. 585) was a great help, as was also this statement (ibid., p. 487): "There is more Christianity in seeing and hearing spiritually than materially. There is more Science in the perpetual exercise of the Mind-faculties than in their loss. Lost they cannot be, while Mind remains." Discouragement had to be routed continually. After several months, however, the trouble completely disappeared. I shall never forget the joy and gratitude I felt as I heard my watch ticking across the room.
Among other causes for gratitude are a love for the Bible such as I had never known before glimpsing the spiritual interpretation given us by our Leader in her textbook; class instruction; more loving-kindness toward my fellow men; and the wide circulation of our Christian Science literature, which is spreading comfort, hope, and healing throughout the world.—(Miss) Mabel A. Rolle, Chicago, Illinois.
