When I was about three years...
When I was about three years old, my parents took up the study of Christian Science for my healing. I was suffering from a severe case of eczema. My parents had spent all their funds on doctors, medicines, and specialists to no avail. After many months of illness, during which I grew steadily worse, I finally went into a coma, which lasted for four days.
Because the kindly family doctor had asserted that there was no hope for my recovery, my mother had been praying to God to save me. Therefore, when Christian Science was recommended, she promptly telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for help, feeling that this Science must be God's answer to her fervent prayers.
The practitioner asked that "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy be procured immediately, and that my mother put in as much time as possible that day reading it. The practitioner also asked that I be brought to her office the following day. This request filled my mother with indignation, because she felt the practitioner did not appreciate the seriousness of my condition. The practitioner assured her that all things are possible to God, and that she would be able to comply with the request.
My father borrowed the textbook from a Christian Science Reading Room and took it to my mother at once. She read continuously that day, and felt that at last she had found a religion she could accept. When my father arrived home that evening, my mother realized she had lost all sense of time, had forgotten to prepare dinner, and, most startling of all, had forgotten all about me. It was found that I was sleeping peacefully, and great was the rejoicing in our household that evening!
Needless to say, the next day my mother was in the practitioner's office, and she had a well child at her side. The sores which had covered my head and body soon faded into their native nothingness, and I was completely healed. I am now a grown woman, and this healing has proved permanent.
Our whole family was in need of healing, and hastened to take up the study of Christian Science. My mother had been a sufferer from asthma and heart trouble since early girlhood, and she was quickly healed of both diseases. My father was subject to periodic sick headaches, so severe that he had to remain in bed for two or three days at a time. This trouble was permanently healed. Rheumatism had confined my grandmother to a wheel chair, and she faced a life of invalidism. She was healed through the study of Christian Science. My grandfather was ill with a type of fever which he was supposed to have contracted when in Alaska. The doctors were baffled by this condition, and claimed it was incurable. He was healed of this fever, and was also able to lay aside a truss which he had worn for twenty years. This healing was so complete that he was immediately able to do very heavy lifting with perfect freedom. Later on, two other members of our family took up Science, and they also have received richly of its blessings.
With such an introduction to Christian Science, is it any wonder that our family became earnest students of this religion, and have never since that time used medicine or turned to any other source for healing?
I am very grateful for the Christian Science Sunday School, and for a life of comparatively painless progress. I am grateful for every problem which has driven or led me to seek a fuller understanding of Christian Science. I deeply appreciate Mrs. Eddy's wise provision for practitioners, to whom we may turn for assistance when we need help.
It is a particular source of gratitude to me that my husband was reared in Christian Science and that he, too, finds Science the answer to all his needs.
To say with sincerity that one is grateful for Christian Science is to say that he is grateful for Mary Baker Eddy. So, I wish to go on record as one who is aware of Mrs. Eddy's great place in Scriptural prophecy, and as one who wishes to show by her life that she is truly grateful to her heavenly Father "for his wonderful works to the children of men" (Ps. 107:8).—(Mrs.) Eunice Parker Stahl, San Francisco, California.
It is indeed a pleasure to verify the foregoing testimony. The healings took place as related by my daughter, and Christian Science has been our only physician ever since. I, too, have had many proofs of the healing efficacy of divine Science, and am deeply grateful to God for His constant care.—Joseph J. Parker.
