Agreement
Human experiences are largely made up of agreements. Mankind's every thought, act, or interest is in agreement with something. Christian Science teaches man's agreement with the law of God, that man is under the absolute control of omniscient Mind, which holds complete jurisdiction and authority over his consciousness, determining his every activity. Putting God first, agreeing that there is nothing more to man than the expression of God, brings deliverance from error.
Believing in the five physical senses is agreeing with matter, agreeing that there is a material creation. Because of their willingness to agree to certain phases of mortal thinking, men find themselves experiencing failure, impotence, sin, sickness, death, destruction. The material sense of selfhood with all its unhappy conditions is the result of agreeing that there is a mortal mind which can form conditions for man. The opposite state of thinking, the realization in some measure of man's immortality, results in health, joy, activity, and abundance. We must agree to health, love, affluence, harmony, joy, before they can be made manifest. "Choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell" (Josh. 24:15). Agree to serve God this day and find peace.
We must be willing to say honestly and humbly (Luke 22:42), "Not my will, but thine, be done," to pray as our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, counsels us (Church Manual, Art. VIII, Sect. 4), "Let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin." We must agree to put aside pride of power and human ambition and see God's reign, the kingdom of heaven.
If one has an absolutely clear mirror, the reflection of a rose before it will be exactly like the original. In the reflection not a petal will be missing, nor will the color be faded, unless this is true of the original. Divine Science reveals man as the reflection of God —in perfect agreement with Him.
To solve a problem in mathematics it is necessary to agree with or accept the principle of mathematics and to follow the rules laid down, never questioning them. In Christian Science we must agree to obey the rules which our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has set forth in her writings. She encourages us when she assures us (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p.262), "To begin rightly is to end rightly." To begin with and to agree with divine Principle, God, is to end with perfection. To prove any theory we must be willing to give up preconceived ideas.
Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, because of her great love for God and man, gave to the world the knowledge of the healing power of God which had been revealed to her. A courageous disciple, she agreed to go forward, willing to point out the errors of mortal thinking. Step by step she organized the Christian Science church, which will go on and on until
"...the earth shall be filled with the
glory of God
As the waters cover the sea."
Throughout her earthly career she listened for His voice, agreeing to follow and rejoice all the way. Christ Jesus recognized his at-one-ment with the Father, and said (John 14:10), "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." Those who agree to follow as he pointed out the way are finding that the Christ dispels all the illusions of mortal thinking, and reveals the kingdom of heaven truly at hand.
Moses had to agree to go forward in obedience to God's command before he was able to lead the children of Israel out of bondage. When "Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back," it was in agreement with God's promise, "My presence shall go with thee" (Ex. 33:14). Elijah had to agree to go to the widow at Zarephath before divine sustenance was shown to him. Naaman was a great man, honorable and mighty in valor, but he had to agree to obey the message of Elisha to "go and wash in Jordan seven times" before he was cleansed of his leprosy and realized that "there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel" (II Kings 5:10, 15).
A young enlisted man, during his first trip at sea, found the suggestion of seasickness almost overwhelming him. He declared the truths which he had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School about God and man's relationship to Him, but the suggestion persisted. The words his small son used when desiring something done for him came to his thought, "I mean right now."
The significance of these words came to him and he was instantly free. He had agreed to the immediate availability of God, that His healing laws were present now. He had acknowledged the ever-presence of divine Love, and this brought instantaneous healing. "Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear" (Isa. 65:24).
The present world conflict is a commentary on the lack of agreement there has been among nations. The present necessity therefore demands a peace plan upon which all can agree. There can be no lasting peace without honest and fulfilled agreement. World peace begins with peace among individuals, each agreeing to practice good will in his own daily experiences, thus obeying the command of Jesus, "That ye love one another." Peace is natural to man, for man is always in perfect agreement with his Father-Mother God.
